8HP50/850RE Automatic Transmission (Service Information): Installation

CAUTION:

The transmission and torque converter must be removed as an assembly to avoid component damage. The converter driveplate, oil pump, or oil seal can be damaged if the converter is left attached to the driveplate during removal. Be sure to remove the transmission and converter as an assembly.

NOTE:

If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

  1. If a replacement transmission is being installed, transfer any components necessary, such as the Mechanical Park Release (MPR) bracket and lever from the original transmission onto the replacement transmission.
  2. Apply a light coating of Mopar® High Temp Grease to the torque converter hub pocket in the rear pocket of the engine's crankshaft.
  3. Install the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, INSTALLATION .

  4. Place the transmission on a jack and secure with chains or similar.
  5. Raise transmission and align the torque converter with the flexplate and the transmission converter housing with the engine block.
    NOTE:

    If the torque converter was spun or removed, align torque converter bolt holes with the starter pocket to ease bolt installation.

  6. Move transmission forward. Then raise, lower, or tilt transmission to align the converter housing with the engine block dowels.
    NOTE:

    It may be necessary to support the rear of the engine during transmission installation.

  7. Carefully work transmission (2) forward and over engine block dowels until converter hub is seated in crankshaft. Verify that no wires, or the transmission vent hose, have become trapped between the engine block and the transmission.

  8. Install bolts (1) to attach the transmission to the engine.

  9. Install remaining torque converter housing to engine bolts (3 and 4). Tighten all torque converter housing bolts to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  10. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction to line up the alignment hole (1) in the flexplate, then start the first bolt.

  11. Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction until the flexplate to torque converter bolts (1) are accessible. There are three sets of two bolts 120° apart.

    NOTE:

    Install all torque converter bolts (1) by hand first. There are 3 sets of two bolts 120° apart.

  12. Install the torque converter to flexplate bolts (1) through the starter pocket and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  13. Connect the transmission vent hose (1).

  14. Place the transmission oil heater (2) and install the three fasteners, tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  15. Connect the transmission oil lines (1) to the transmission and oil heater. Be sure that the lines are fully seated.
  16. Snap the Jiffy Tite lock over the line fitting.

  17. Install the speed nut (1) retaining the transmission cooler line bracket (2) at the bellhousing, near the engine oil dipstick tube (3).

  18. Connect left front transmission line clip (1).

  19. Install the two fasteners (1) that hold the transmission heater coolant hoses (2) to the right side of the transmission.

  20. Install the Manual Park Release (MPR) cable (2) into the bracket (3) and lock into place.

  21. Check O-ring on plug connector (1), and replace if necessary.
  22. Install the plug connector (1) into the adapter plug (2). Turn bayonet lock of the adapter plug (2) clockwise to connect plug connector (1).
  23. Install the transfer case. Refer to INSTALLATION, MP3023 or INSTALLATION, MP2010 .
    NOTE:

    Support the front of the front driveshaft, do not install the front driveshaft to axle bolts until the left side catalytic converter is installed.

  24. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft to the transfer case. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, FRONT, INSTALLATION .

  25. Install the crossmember and tighten bolts (1 and 3) to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  26. Install the transmission mount nuts (2) and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  27. Install the rear driveshaft. Refer to SHAFT, DRIVE, REAR, INSTALLATION .

  28. Remove the zip tie (3) from the MPR lever.
  29. Connect the MPR cable (1) to the MPR lever (2).
  30. Install heat shield for rear driveshaft/muffler.
  31. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft heat shield.
  32. If 4WD, install the front driveshaft to axle flange bolts and tighten to the proper specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
  33. Install the muffler. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, INSTALLATION, 3.6L SINGLE EXHAUST or MUFFLER, EXHAUST, INSTALLATION, 3.6L DUAL EXHAUST .

  34. Install the starter. Refer to STARTER, INSTALLATION, 3.6L .
  35. If equipped, install skid plates. Refer to UNDER BODY PROTECTION .
  36. Lower the vehicle.
  37. Fill the transmission with appropriate fluid. Refer to TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE  .
  38. Connect the battery negative cable.
  39. If the valve body is replaced, program the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
  40. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
