Pinpoint Test S: P0C64

  1. NOTE: The Inverter System Controller (ISC) is referred to as the SOBDMC (Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module C) in the scan tool.
    NOTE: Drive Motor B refers to the electric generator. Drive Motor A refers to the electric motor.

    Normal Operation and Fault Conditions 

    REFER to: Electric Powertrain Control - System Operation and Component Description .

    DTC Fault Trigger Conditions 

    DTC Description Fault Trigger Condition
    SOBDMC P0C64:00 Generator Position Sensor Circuit A: No Sub Type Information This DTC sets when a generator resolver failure is detected.

    Possible Causes 

    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Transmission

  2. S1 CHECK FOR INVERTER SYSTEM CONTROLLER (ISC) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    NOTE: Wiring overlays or repinning of circuits are NOT appropriate for DTC P0C64 due to risk of hardware damage.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, perform the Inverter System Controller (ISC) self-test.

    Is DTC P0C65:00 present in the Inverter System Controller (ISC)? 

    Yes  GO to Pinpoint Test AD 
    No  GO to  S2
  3. S2 CHECK THE INVERTER SYSTEM CONTROLLER (ISC) CALIBRATION LEVEL

    • Verify the Inverter System Controller (ISC) is at the latest calibration level.

    Is the Inverter System Controller (ISC) at the latest calibration level? 

    Yes  GO to  S3
    No  UPDATE the Inverter System Controller (ISC) to the latest calibration level.
  4. S3 VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEM

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Visually inspect the low voltage cables between the Inverter System Controller (ISC) and the transmission.

    • Make sure all the low voltage connectors are correctly and securely connected and latched.

    • Examine all the low voltage cables and connectors for damaged, burned or overheated insulation and loose or broken connections.

    Is a concern present? 

    Yes  REPAIR as necessary. CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s and REPEAT the self-test.
    No  GO to  S4
  5. S4 CHECK FOR INVERTER SYSTEM CONTROLLER (ISC) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)

    • Ignition ON.

    • CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, run the Inverter System Controller (ISC) self-test.

    Are any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) present? 

    Yes  For P0A45, GO to Pinpoint Test R  For P0C5F, GO to Pinpoint Test AE  For P0C66, GO to Pinpoint Test AF  For P0C67, GO to Pinpoint Test AG  For P0C6B, GO to Pinpoint Test AH  For P0C6C, GO to Pinpoint Test AI  For P0C64, GO to  S5
    For all other Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) refer to the master DTC chart.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  6. S5 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION GENERATOR RESOLVER RESISTANCES

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect HF45 Transmission C1111.

    • Measure and record:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance between 12.4 and 18.6 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S6
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. S6 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION GENERATOR RESOLVER RESISTANCES

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Measure and record:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance between 19.6 and 29.4 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S7
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  8. S7 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION GENERATOR RESOLVER RESISTANCES

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    • Measure and record:

    Is the resistance between 18.4 and 27.6 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S8
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  9. S8 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER GR1 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    • Measure and record:

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms?, 

    Yes  GO to  S9
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  10. S9 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER GS1 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S10
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  11. S10 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER GS2 CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    • Measure and record:

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S11
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  12. S11 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER SENSOR FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Use this image as reference when performing the following test.

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S12
    No  INSTALL a new transmission, this does not and should not include a new Inverter System Controller (ISC)/SOBDMC. REFER to: Transmission .
    CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s. REPEAT the self-test.
  13. S12 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION GENERATOR RESOLVER HARNESS CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Disconnect Inverter System Controller (ISC) C199B.

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S13
    No  INSTALL a new harness.
  14. S13 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER HARNESS CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S14
    No  INSTALL a new harness.
  15. S14 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER HARNESS CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure and record:

    Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S15
    No  INSTALL a new harness.
  16. S15 CHECK THE GENERATOR RESOLVER CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure and record:

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new harness.
    No  GO to  S16
  17. S16 CHECK THE MOTOR RESOLVER CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO THE EXTERNAL CABLE SHIELD

    • Ignition OFF.

    Is the resistance more than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  S17
    No  INSTALL a new harness.
  18. S17 CHECK FOR CORRECT INVERTER SYSTEM CONTROLLER (ISC) OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Repair:

      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary

    • Reconnect the Inverter System Controller (ISC) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

    • Connect HF 45 Transmission C1111.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Wait 5 minutes

    • CLEAR the Inverter System Controller (ISC) DTC s.

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Start the engine.

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, run the Inverter System Controller (ISC) self-test.

    Is DTC P0C64 present? 

    Yes  GO to  S18
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  19. S18 CHECK FOR APPLICABLE SERVICE ARTICLES

    • CHECK OASIS for any applicable service articles: TSB, GSB, SSM or FSA.

    Was a service article found? 

    Yes  DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the service article instructions.
    No  REFER to: Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Input and Output Controls .
