Test O: No Module/Network Communications - SCP Network
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Pickup, 2002 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2002 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2002 Ford Excursion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Depending on module configuration, with all modules connected and with ignition switch in RUN position or with engine running, 2-3 volts should be present at DLC terminals No. 2 (Tan/Orange wire) and No. 10 (Pink/Light Blue wire). These are the SCP diagnostic communications network circuits.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Inspect Data Link Connector (DLC) for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If DLC is okay, go to next step.
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) 104-pin connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between PCM connector terminal No. 16 and DLC terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . Also measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between PCM connector terminal No. 15 and DLC terminal No. 10. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 4. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Disconnect in-line harness connector C144. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between in-line connector C144 (female side) terminal No. 14 and DLC terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . Also measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between in-line connector C144 (female side) terminal No. 13 and DLC terminal No. 10. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair open in Tan/Orange wire and/or Pink/Light Blue wire between PCM connector and in-line C144 connector (male side). If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire between in-line connector C144 (female side) and DLC.
- Ensure PCM harness connector C175 is disconnected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics network test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If scan tool displays SYSTEM PASSED, go to step 11. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED and vehicle is equipped with an APCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED and vehicle is equipped with PATS and does not have an APCM, go to step 7. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED and vehicle is not equipped with PATS or an APCM, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect PCM harness connector C175. Disconnect APCM 4-pin harness connector. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between APCM 4-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2. See Figure. Also measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between APCM harness connector terminal No. 4 and DLC terminal No. 10. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire between APCM and DLC.
- Ensure APCM 4-pin harness connector is disconnected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics network test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If scan tool displays SYSTEM PASSED, go to step 12. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED and vehicle is equipped with PATS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED and vehicle is not equipped with PATS, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect APCM 4-pin harness connector. Disconnect 16-pin Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) module harness connector C252. Measure resistance of Tan/Orange wire between PATS module connector C252 terminal No. 5 and Data Link Connector (DLC) terminal No. 2. See Figure. Also measure resistance of Pink/Light Blue wire between PATS module connector C252 terminal No. 4 and DLC terminal No. 10. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire between PATS module and DLC.
- Ensure PATS harness connector C252 is disconnected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics network test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If scan tool displays SYSTEM PASSED, go to step 13. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED, go to next step.
- Connect PCM, APCM and PATS module harness connectors. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C220a. Measure resistance in Tan/Orange wire between the instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 1 and DLC connector terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure . Also measure resistance in Pink/Light Blue wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 2 and DLC connector terminal No. 10. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire and test system operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Ensure instrument cluster harness connector C220a is disconnected. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics network test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If scan tool displays SYSTEM PASSED, go to step 14. If scan tool does not display SYSTEM PASSED, system is okay at this time, problem may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
- Disconnect PCM connectors and inspect for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Operate system to verify problem. If problem is present, replace PCM. Perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If problem no longer exists, problem may have been caused by poor contact at connector.
- Disconnect APCM connectors and inspect for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Operate system to verify problem. If problem is present, replace APCM. Perform DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS NETWORK TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If problem no longer exists, problem may have been caused by poor contact at connector.
- Disconnect PATS module connectors and inspect for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Operate system to verify problem. If problem is present, replace PATS module. See PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article. If problem no longer exists, problem may have been caused by poor contact at connector.
- Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors and inspect for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Reconnect all connectors. Operate system to verify problem. If problem is present, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER in appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article. If problem no longer exists, problem may have been caused by poor contact at connector.
