REFERENCE

This Service Bulletin supplements Service Manual: Climate control, Section 8 (87), S70/V70/C70, 1997-, TP 8710201, for information about any customer reported symptoms, programming and fault-tracing.

BACKGROUND

This service bulletin is a supplement to existing information. As a running introduction in production during August 1998 the electronic climate control system (ECC) control module has been updated with a new function allowing the sensitivity of the sun sensor to be programmed. This means that it is possible to program the extent to which the control module takes into account the intensity of the sun. The memory cassette dated 04-12-1998 and later for the Volvo System Tester has been updated to allow this function to be programmed.

The new control module replaces the earlier version and can be installed in both older and newer cars.

The sun sensor sensitivity cannot be programmed on the following older control modules:

CHECKING THE SUN SENSOR PROGRAMMING

FAULT-TRACING INFORMATION

CONDITION

  • No diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored.
  • The fault is permanent.

POSSIBLE SOURCE

  • The sun sensor sensitivity in the ECC control module is programmed too high or too low.

FAULT SYMPTOM(S)

  • The passenger compartment temperature does not correspond to the set value.
  • The passenger compartment temperature is not reduced when sun intensity is high.
  • Airflow may vary.

PROGRAMMING ECC SOLAR SENSOR

1) CHECK THE PROGRAMMING OF THE ECC SUN SENSOR SENSITIVITY

NOTE: The intensity of the sun affects the temperature in the passenger compartment. To maintain an even temperature in the passenger compartment irrespective of the intensity of the sun, the ECC control module compensates the temperature setting depending on the signal from the sun sensor. The degree of sensitivity can be programmed so that the calculation of the ECC control module can be adapted. This allows some account to be taken of the driver's wishes for the climate settings in the car. The sensitivity can be set in 7 different steps, from -4 to +2. The higher the value, the more the control module compensates for the intensity of the sun. However if compensation is high, drafts may be felt as the fan speed increases. The lower the value, the less the control module compensates for the intensity of the sun. However, low compensation may lead to too high temperature in the passenger compartment when the intensity of the sun is high. Value -4 results in no compensation. The value should only be changed if there is no doubt that the customer complaint is due to sun compensation.

Ignition on.

Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module.

Read off the sun sensor programming. Make a note of the value. Program as required. Programmable compensation is: between +2 and -4 in steps of 1.
