Gearshift Cables: Installation
- Push the new gearshift cables through the firewall. Check that they are on the correct side of the steering column. The left mounting on the gear selector assembly, and the gearshift cable that goes on the left, are both marked yellow. Push the gearshift cables into the sheath as far as possible and work the cables individually below the air duct and through bracket on the center console. See Figure
. Check that the cable marked yellow is operating smoothly in its sheath. The other cable runs slightly stiffer because there is more grease in the sheath.
- Install retaining clips securing the gearshift cables in gear selector assembly. Install ball cups to the gear shift links. See Figure
.
- Install gearshift assembly to body. See Figure
. Install cross member on the side reinforcement members. Install the 4 bolts to the gearshift assembly. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

- Install screws for center console bracket. See Figure
. Reconnect air duct. Install 2 nuts on the lead-in. Install panel and fold back carpet.
- Install center console with screws in front and rear edges of console. See Figure
. Connect harness connectors.
- Install the following items:
- Cigar lighter panel/center console locker with 2 screws in rear edge.
- Install data link connector to panel.
- Cover plate beneath hand brake lever.
- Glove compartment cover.
- Gear shift lever boot to the center console. Press on the catches at the front edge, the clips on the sides and rear edge.
- Check that dampers on the gearshift cable bracket are okay. Install gearshift cables on cable bracket with the retaining clips. See Figure
. The outboard bracket and selector cables are marked in yellow. Lubricate selector lever lugs with appropriate grease. Install gearshift cables to the shift selector with washers and locking clips.
- Install air cleaner housing. Install timer valve on air cleaner housing. Install turbo hoses and connectors (if applicable). Install battery negative lead.
