NOTE: This TECH-DCS gram replaces and supersedes TECH-DCS gram 34-02 dated December 2, 1998.

DESCRIPTION

This software upgrade consists of 3 actions in one.

  1. Climate System - Air blows cold on one side and warm on the other.
  2. ECM - Under certain specific operating conditions which can involve engine braking, inconsistencies in low engine rpms may occur on S80's equipped with the B6284T6 engine. An Engine Control Module (ECM) software upgrade will be performed on these vehicles during the PDS mechanical.
  3. TCM - Due to low system voltage, DTC 530D (may appear in the ECM) and "Trans Service Required" may appear on the Driver Information Module. With this download, DTC 0045 in the TCM will also be corrected.

SERVICE

Software Download .. Function ID: 221

WARNING: Battery charger must be connected to the vehicle prior to the software download.
  • US Spec cars turn headlight switch to park position.
  • Canadian cars - remove fuse 1 and 2.
  1. Log onto VADIS.
  2. Set up Vehicle profile - S80, including Chassis ID#.
  3. Select software manager.
  4. Select purchase.
  5. Enter software Function ID: 221 (IN SOFTWARE FUNCTION BOX).
  6. Check OK.
  7. Enter purchase reference number: (R.O.#/CUST NAME or etc..)
  8. Check OK.
  9. "Warning Screen" ("CM" Hardware box is left blank).
  10. Check YES.
  11. *  Screen Status will change to "purchasing" *.
  12. *  Screen Status will change to "available" *  (This may take up to 10 minutes) - Please be patient - if you get "invalid" please try again - If you get invalid two times in 30 minutes. call the Volvo help desk.
  13. *  Click on the line that says "available" to highlight it*.
  14. Click on "DOWNLOAD" tab.
  15. "Software Detail Screen" -- Click OK.
  16. *  Screen says - "Do you really want to download the software function" .. Click YES.
  17. Follow screen instructions.
  18. Connect VCT 2000.
  19. Turn ignition on to position two.
  20. Click on the VCT 2000 icon on the screen.

NOTE #1: If you get "Information Mismatch" just follow screen

directions. Wait a minimum of 10 minutes then proceed from

step 3; as long as the vehicle profile has not been changed).

NOTE #2: While doing the download you will notice that the car is

"off/asleep" - do not turn anything on or off!!

  1. Screen will then change to "Software Downloaded".
  2. Headlights will flash when download completed - wait up to 2-3 minutes after lights flash.
  3. VADIS will verify on screen when download completed. Screen says "COMPLETION" Select CONTINUE to exit (modem dials back up - to confirm the download) .. then click on CANCEL -- If your cart has been LAN (VEN) connected, you will not hear the modem redial back up.
  4. Watch for the status on screen to change from "CONFIRMING DOWNLOAD" to "DOWNLOAD CONFIRMED".
  5. Then click on "CANCEL".
  6. Screen will then return to main menu.

Once the Download has been completed .. it is necessary to reset the adaptation values for the TCM and the climate system. Please proceed as follows. The first set of instructions are for the TCM .. the second set of instructions are for re-initializing the Climate system.

  1. Go back to Main Menu.
  2. Click on Vehicle Communications.
  3. Select the complete vehicle profile.
  4. Select Group 4 (transmission).
  5. Select - Trans Control Module.
  6. Select - Resetting Adaptation.
    NOTE: HINT! (POP UP BOX) applies to vehicles when the transmission is being replaced or transmission fluid is being replaced. Disregard this "HINT" for this particular function resetting and continue on as follows!
  7. Click on the VCT 2000 Icon.
  8. When the box pops up: Click on "Erasing Adaptiv Data TCM". Do not click on "RESETTING COUNTER TRANS OIL".
  9. Click on Start.
  10. When the start is grayed out - resetting is complete.
  11. Click on stop.
  12. Click on continue - procedure is complete.
  13. Cancel out.
NOTE: If vehicles have been downloaded with 221 previously, it is possible that initialization of the ECC will take up to 30 key cycles depending on the driving pattern. If a vehicle has had 221 and still has similar temperature control complaints - you'll need to re-initialize the climate system. Proceed with the following instructions:

ECC SYSTEM INITIALIZATION

It will still be necessary to manually initiate the system according to the description below.

The following method should be used to manually initiate the climate control system.

Electronic Climate Control ECC:

- Activate "AUTO".

- Activate "DEFROSTER" (the face level arrow).

- Turn the left temp knob to max heat.

- Turn the right temp knob to max heat.

- Wait for 20 seconds.

- De-activate "DEFROSTER".

- Activate "VENTILATION" (the middle arrow).

- Turn the left temp knob to max cold.

- Turn the right temp knob to max cold.

Submit claim information in accordance with SMB 34-6 .
