Center Support Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Lubricate all components with Dexron-IIE ATF. Install NEW seal rings on sun gear shaft and center support assembly. Ensure ends of seal rings are hooked together and seal rings move freely in groove.
  2. Install NEW "O" rings on brake pistons and center support assembly. Install brake pistons in center support assembly, using care not to damage "O" rings. Install spring retainer and return springs on brake piston for brake No. 1.
  3. Using spring compressor, compress return springs on brake piston for brake No. 1. Install retaining ring at center of center support assembly. Remove spring compressor. Ensure retaining ring is properly seated in center support assembly.
  4. Install spring retainer and return springs on brake piston for brake No. 2. Using spring compressor, compress return springs on brake piston for brake No. 2. Install retaining ring at center of center support assembly. Remove spring compressor. Ensure retaining ring is properly seated in center support assembly.
CAUTION: When checking brake piston operation, DO NOT  apply more than 14 psi (.98 kg/cm2 ) air pressure on oil passage on center support assembly or brake piston may be dislocated.
  5. Apply 14 psi (.98 kg/cm2 ) air pressure to oil passage on center support assembly to check operation of appropriate brake piston. See Figure . Operating sound should be heard and brake piston should move when air pressure is applied.
NOTE: Some models may have a pressure plate for brake No. 1 or No. 2 that is flat and does not have a chamfered side. If pressure plate has a chamfered side, ensure pressure plate is installed so chamfered side is facing upward, toward retaining ring.
  6. Install brake plate (thin plate), brake disc and pressure plate for brake No. 1 in front of center support assembly. If pressure plate has a chamfered side, ensure chamfered side is facing upward, toward retaining ring. Install retaining ring. Ensure ends of retaining ring are not positioned in open area on center support assembly.
  7. Install brake plate (thin plate), brake discs, brake plates and pressure plate for brake No. 2 in rear of center support assembly. If pressure plate has a chamfered side, ensure chamfered side is facing upward, toward retaining ring. Install retaining ring. Ensure ends of retaining ring are not positioned in open area on center support assembly.
  8. Using feeler gauge, measure brake clearance between pressure plate and retaining ring on both brake No. 1 and brake No. 2. Brake No. 1 and brake No. 2 clearance should be .012-.047" (.30-1.20 mm).
  9. Install sun gear shaft with one-way clutch assembly and brake hub in center support assembly. Ensure splines on brake hub align with all brake discs. Install retaining ring on end of sun gear shaft.
