Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Inspection And Removal And Installation/Replacement

Transmission Jack - No part number

Special tool was not known at the time of creation

WARNING: Overhead Suspended Load and Falling Parts 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury when elevated load or components are incorrectly secured/supported.
  • All lifting equipment weight rating must meet or exceed the weight of the vehicle and any contents.
  • The lifting equipment must be in good condition and approved for use.
  • Only lift the vehicle from the identified lift points.
  • Ensure vehicle is stable before performing any work underneath.
  • Ensure there are no loose components which may fall.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Seek assistance when handling larger components.

Inspection Procedure: 

  1. Check whether the ball pin is loose and replace the inner tie rod of the steering link if necessary.

Removal Procedure: 

The procedure for the left-hand component is identical to that for the right-hand side. 

  1. Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
  2. Remove the steering gear boot. Refer to STEERING GEAR BOOT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT

  3. While holding the steering gear rack (1) with using a suitable tool, loosen the inner steering rod (2) at the marked points (arrows) with a wrench.

    Installation note: When fixing the steering gear rack (2) with using a suitable tool, it must be fixed at a specific position at the end of the rack to avoid damage to the rack. 

Installation Procedure: 

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following. All fasteners must be tightened to torque specification! 
  2. Position the inner steering rod and tighten to 89 Nm.
  3. Install the steering gear boot. Refer to STEERING GEAR BOOT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT 
  4. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
  5. Perform wheel alignment adjustment the front axle. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT ADJUSTMENT - FRONT AXLE
  6. Diagnostics, Programming and Setup. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING IDS IN SERVICE
