SPIRAL CABLE (for Hatchback): Installation: Installation
Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing. Refer to PRECAUTION .
- INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/o VSC)
- Check that the ignition switch is off.
- Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal.WARNING:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
- Check that the front tires face straight forward.
- Check that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.NOTE:
Perform the operation when the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. Otherwise, the turn signal pin will break.
- Engage the 3 claws to install the spiral cable sub-assembly.NOTE:
Pull the lock pin out before installing the steering wheel when replacing the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.
- Connect the airbag connector.
- Connect the horn connector.
- INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE WITH SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ VSC)
- Check that the ignition switch is turned off.
- Check that the negative battery terminal is detached.WARNING:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
- Check that the front tires face straight forward.
- Check that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.NOTE:
Perform the operation when the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. Otherwise, the turn signal pin will break.
- Engage the 3 claws to install the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly.NOTE:
Pull the lock pin out before installing the steering wheel when replacing the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with a new one.
- Connect the steering sensor connector.
- Connect the airbag connector.
- Connect the horn connector.
- INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 6
- INSTALL LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 7
- ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE
- Check that the ignition switch is turned off.
- Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.WARNING:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
- Confirm that the front tires face straight forward.
- Center the spiral cable.
- Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise until it locks.
NOTE:
- To avoid breaking the spiral cable, turn the spiral cable gently and do not use excessive force.
- Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.
HINT:
The spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly turns a maximum of approximately 5 times.
- Turn the spiral cable 2.5 times clockwise from its locked position and align the alignment marks.

- Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.
HINT:
The spiral cable can be rotated approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.
- Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise until it locks.
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 5
- INSTALL STEERING PAD See step 1
- INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER See step 2
- CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf)
- INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
