SPIRAL CABLE (for Hatchback): Installation: Installation

WARNING:

Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing. Refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/o VSC) 
    1. Check that the ignition switch is off.
    2. Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    3. Check that the front tires face straight forward.
    4. Check that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.
      NOTE:

      Perform the operation when the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. Otherwise, the turn signal pin will break.

    5. Engage the 3 claws to install the spiral cable sub-assembly.
      NOTE:

      Pull the lock pin out before installing the steering wheel when replacing the spiral cable sub-assembly with a new one.

    6. Connect the airbag connector.
    7. Connect the horn connector.
  2. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE WITH SENSOR SUB-ASSEMBLY (w/ VSC) 
    1. Check that the ignition switch is turned off.
    2. Check that the negative battery terminal is detached.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    3. Check that the front tires face straight forward.
    4. Check that the turn signal switch is in the neutral position.
      NOTE:

      Perform the operation when the turn signal switch is in the neutral position. Otherwise, the turn signal pin will break.

    5. Engage the 3 claws to install the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly.
      NOTE:

      Pull the lock pin out before installing the steering wheel when replacing the spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly with a new one.

    6. Connect the steering sensor connector.
    7. Connect the airbag connector.
    8. Connect the horn connector.
  3. INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 6
  4. INSTALL LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 7
  5. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE 
    1. Check that the ignition switch is turned off.
    2. Check that the cable is disconnected from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    3. Confirm that the front tires face straight forward.
    4. Center the spiral cable.
      1. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise until it locks.

        NOTE:
        • To avoid breaking the spiral cable, turn the spiral cable gently and do not use excessive force.
        • Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.

        HINT: 

        The spiral cable with sensor sub-assembly turns a maximum of approximately 5 times.

      2. Turn the spiral cable 2.5 times clockwise from its locked position and align the alignment marks.

        NOTE:
        • To avoid breaking the spiral cable, turn the spiral cable gently and do not use excessive force.
        • Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.

        HINT: 

        The spiral cable can be rotated approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.

  6. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY  . Refer to INSTALLATION - Step 5
  7. INSTALL STEERING PAD  See step  1
  8. INSTALL LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER  See step  2
  9. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 

    Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) 

  10. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT 

    Refer to DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
