DTC P0442 Brake Switch "B" Circuit High: Procedure

  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STOP LIGHT SW) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Stop Light Switch.
    4. Read the values displayed on the Techstream.

      OK

      Tester Display Measurement Item: Range Normal Condition
      Stop Light Switch Stop light switch status:
      ON or OFF
      • ON: Brake pedal is depressed
      • OFF: Brake pedal is released

    NG → See step   2 

    OK → See step   5 

  2. INSPECT STOP LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the stop light switch assembly.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 Switch pin not pushed Below 1 Ω
      Switch pin pushed 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 Switch pin not pushed 10 kΩ or higher
      Switch pin pushed Below 1 Ω
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *1 Component without harness connected
      (Stop light Switch Assembly)

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT STOP LIGHT CONTROL RELAY

    1. Remove the stop light control relay from the engine room relay block.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      3 - 4 Battery voltage not applied Below 1 Ω
      3 - 5 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 4 Battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 10 kΩ or higher
      3 - 5 Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPLACE STOP LIGHT CONTROL RELAY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ECM - BATTERY) 
    1. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    2. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E77-18 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal is depressed 11 to 14 V
      E77-18 (STP) - Body ground Brake pedal is released Below 1 V

      (to ECM)

    NG → REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK → See step   7 

  5. CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS. Refer to CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 
  6. REPLACE STOP LIGHT SWITCH ASSEMBLY. Refer to REMOVAL 
  7. REPLACE ECM. Refer to REMOVAL
