Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester or OBD II scan tool. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was LEAN or RICH, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

When using intelligent tester

  1. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL)
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the intelligent tester main switch ON.
    3. On the intelligent tester, enter the following menus: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG. Read the values.

      Result

      STARTER SIGNAL

      Ignition Switch Condition ON START
      STA Signal OFF ON

    OK: CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS

    NG: GO TO NEXT STEP

  2. INSPECT PARK / NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
    1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Check the resistance between each terminal shown below when the shift lever is moved to each position.

      Standard resistance

PARK / NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY

Shift Position Tester Connection Specified Condition
      P 2 - 6 and 4 - 5 Below 1 Ω
      R 2 - 1
      N 2 - 9 and 4 - 5
      D, 4 2 - 7
      3 2 - 3
      2, L 2 - 8

    3. Reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

NG: REPLACE PARK / NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (GO TO NEXT STEP 3 AFTER REPLACEMENT)

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP

      Result

      STARTER SIGNAL (1 OF 2)

      Ignition Switch Condition ON START
      STA Signal OFF ON

    OK: SYSTEM OK

    NG: GO TO NEXT STEP

  4. INSPECT IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY
    1. Measure the resistance of the ignition switch terminals.

      Standard resistance

      IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY

      Switch Condition Terminal No. Resistance
LOCK All Terminals 10 kΩ or higher
      ACC 1 - 3 Below 1 Ω
      ON 1 - 2, 1 - 3, 2 - 3, 5 - 6

NG: REPLACE IGNITION OR STARTER SWITCH ASSEMBLY (GO TO NEXT STEP 5 AFTER REPLACEMENT)

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP

      Result

      STARTER SIGNAL (2 OF 2)

      Ignition Switch Condition ON START
      STA Signal OFF ON

    OK: SYSTEM OK

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

When not using intelligent tester

  1. CHECK ECM (STA VOLTAGE)
    1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    2. Measure the voltage of the ECM connectors.

      Standard voltage

      ECM (STA VOLTAGE)

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
