Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Hand-held tester: 

  1. Connect hand-held tester, and read throttle valve opening percentage. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the hand-held tester ON.

    CHECK: 

    Read the throttle valve opening angle (percentage) for the VTA circuit and read the voltage for the VTA2 circuit.

    OK: 

    VALVE OPENING POSITION

    Accelerator pedal Throttle valve opening angle expressed as percentage (VTA) Voltage (VTA2)
    Released 8 to 20 % 2.0 to 2.9 V
    Depressed 64 to 96 % 4.7 to 5.1 V

    1. OK : Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
    2. NG : Go To Next Step. 
  2. Check throttle position sensor (See  INSPECTION  ). 
    1. NG : Replace throttle position sensor (See  INSTALLATION  ). 
    2. OK : Go To Next Step 
  3. Check voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the ECM cover.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector.

    OK: 

    1. Voltage: 4.5 to 5.5 V

    1. NG : Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
    2. OK : Go To Next Step 
  4. Check voltage between terminals VTA and E2, and VTA2 and E2 of ECM connector. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the ECM cover.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminals VTA and E2, and VTA2 and E2 of ECM connector.

    OK:

    1. OK : Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
    2. NG : Check for open and short in harness and connectors in VC, VTA, VTA and E2 circuits between ECM and throttle position sensor (See  PROCEDURE  ).  

OBD II scan tool (excluding hand-held tester): 

  1. Check throttle position sensor (See  INSPECTION  ). 
    1. NG : Replace throttle position sensor (See  INSTALLATION  ). 
    2. OK : Go To Next Step 
  2. Check voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the ECM cover.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminals VC and E2 of ECM connector.

    OK: 

    1. Voltage: 4.5 to 5.5 V

    1. NG : Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
    2. OK : Go To Next Step 
  3. Check voltage between terminals VTA and E2, and VTA2 and E2 of ECM connector. 

    PREPARATION: 

    1. Remove the ECM cover.
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.

    CHECK: 

    Measure the voltage between terminals VTA and E2, and VTA2 and E2 of ECM connector.

    OK:

    1. OK : Replace ECM (See  ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)  ). 
    2. NG : Check for open and short in harness and connectors in VC, VTA, VTA and E2 circuits between ECM and throttle position sensor (See  PROCEDURE  ).
