Inspection Procedure

  1. READ VALUE OF OBD II SCAN TOOL OR HAND-HELD TESTER
    1. Warm up the engine.
    2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
    3. Connect the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    4. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester main SW ON.
    5. Shift the shift lever to the P, R, N, 2 and L positions, select the item "PNP SW (NSW)", "REVERSE", "2ND" and "LOW" in the DATALIST and read its value displayed on the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester.
NOTE: The values given below for "Normal Condition" are representative values, so a vehicle may still be normal even if its value differs from those listed here. Do not depend solely on the "Normal Condition" here when deciding whether or not the part is faulty.

    1. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Check continuity between each terminal shown below when the shift lever is moved to each position.
      CONTINUITY CHECK

Shift Postion Terminal No. To Continuity
      P 1-3 6-9
      R 2-3 .....
      N 3-5 6-9
      D 3-7 .....
      2 3-4 .....
      L 3-8 .....

      OK:

      There is continuity.

NG: REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSY (See  PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  )

      OK

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH - ECM)
Fig 3: Measuring Voltage Between Terminal R, 2 And L Of ECM And E1

    1. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Turn the IG switch ON and measure the voltage between terminals R, 2 and L of ECM and the E1 when the shift lever is shifted to the following position.

      OK:

      HARNESS AND CONNECTOR CHECK

      Shift Postion Terminal Voltage (V)
      R R-E1 10-14
      2 2-E1 10-14
      L L-E1 10-14
    4. Turn the IG switch OFF and connect the ECM connector.
    5. Turn the IG switch ON and measure the voltage between terminals NSW of ECM and the E1 when the shift lever is shifted to the following position.

      OK:

      HARNESS AND CONNECTOR CHECK

      Shift Postion Terminal Voltage (V)
      P NSW-E1 Below 1
      N NSW-E1 Below 1
      Except P and N NSW-E1 10-14

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS (CONNECTOR (See  TESTING PROCEDURE  )

    OK

CHECK AND REPLACE ECM (See  TESTING PROCEDURE  )
