Test No. 27: Jam Protection Function & Auto Up Or Down Function Does Not Operate On Driver's Side Front Door Power Window

NOTE: Jam protection function causes power window to stop and open half way if something becomes caught between window and window frame during power window auto up (automatic closing) operation. Auto up or down function controls automatic operation of power window. When power window switch is pushed completely downward and then released, or pulled completely upward and then released, the power window will fully open or close.
  1. If Toyota hand-held tester is available, go to next step. If Toyota hand-held tester is not available, go to step  3.
  2. Connect hand-held tester to Data Link Connector (DLC) No. 3. See Figure. Using hand-held tester manufacturer's instructions, check operation of jam protection limit switch on driver's side front door power window motor while using the DATA LIST. Jam protection limit switch should read OFF when window is fully closed. If jam protection limit switch does not operate properly, remove hand-held tester. Go to next step. If jam protection limit switch operates properly, remove hand-held tester. Go to step  5.
  3. Check jam protection limit switch on driver's side front door power window motor. If jam protection limit switch is okay, go to next step. If jam protection limit switch is defective, replace power window motor and recheck operation of jam protection and auto up or down function.
  4. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between jam protection limit switch on driver's door power window motor and driver's door Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER WINDOWS - TRUCKS article. Driver's door ECU is located on driver's door and is incorporated into the power window switch assembly. See Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connector are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck operation of jam protection and auto up or down function.
  5. Check jam protection pulse switch on driver's side front door power window motor. If jam protection pulse switch is okay, go to next step. If jam protection pulse switch is defective, replace power window motor and recheck operation of jam protection and auto up or down function.
  6. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between jam protection pulse switch on driver's door power window motor and driver's door ECU. Jam protection pulse switch may also be referred to as jam protection pulse sensor or pulse sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER WINDOWS - TRUCKS article. If wiring harness and electrical connector are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck operation of jam protection and auto up or down function.
  7. Check driver's door ECU for proper voltage and input signals. See DRIVER'S DOOR ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck operation of jam protection and auto up or down function.
  8. Replace driver's door ECU with a known-good door ECU and recheck operation of jam protection and auto up or down function. If jam protection and auto up or down function operates properly, original driver's door ECU was defective. If jam protection and auto up or down function still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for driver's door ECU for intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in POWER WINDOWS - TRUCKS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
