Test No. 9: Illuminated Entry System Does Not Operate

NOTE: When body Electronic Control Unit (ECU) receives a courtesy signal, the body ECU will turn on the illuminated entry system which consists of front personal light. See Figure. Front personal light will come on for illuminated entry system operation when driver's door, passenger's door or back (rear liftgate) door is opened, provided switch on front personal light is in the DOOR position. After all doors are closed, the light should remain on for about 15 seconds and then fade out. Light will fade out immediately if any of the following conditions exist: all doors are closed with ignition switch in ACC or ON position, or all doors are closed and both side doors are locked. Illuminated entry system should also operate when driver's door, passenger's door and back (rear liftgate) door are unlocked simultaneously with a key or the keyless entry remote transmitter even if door is not opened. Front personal light may also be referred to as personal light.
  1. Check DOME fuse (7.5-amp). Fuse is located in instrument panel junction block. See Figure. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is defective, repair short in wiring for fuse. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. For additional wiring for power supply circuit, see POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Check front personal light. See FRONT PERSONAL LIGHT  under COMPONENT TESTS. If front personal light is okay, go to next step. If front personal light is defective, replace light assembly and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  3. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between battery, DOME fuse, front personal light and body Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Front personal light may also be referred to as personal light. Body ECU is located on instrument panel junction block and contains 12-pin, 22-pin and 25 pin electrical connectors. See Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  4. Check body ECU for proper voltage and input signals. See BODY ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  5. Replace body ECU with a known-good body ECU and recheck illuminated entry system operation. If illuminated entry system operates properly, original body ECU was defective. If illuminated entry system still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for body ECU and front personal light for intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
