Trunk Opener System Does Not Work

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Checking Trunk Main & Cancel Switches, Circuits

Remove trunk main switch from dashboard. Using DVOM, check for continuity between trunk main switch terminals. With switch depressed, continuity should exist. With switch released, continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace trunk main switch.
  2. Remove trunk opener cancel switch from glove box. Using DVOM, check for continuity between trunk opener cancel switch terminals. With switch depressed, continuity should exist. With switch released, continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace trunk opener cancel switch.
  3. Disconnect body control ECU. Check continuity in following circuits:
    • On Blue/Black wire between body ECU connector B5, terminal No. 18 and trunk main switch.
    • On Blue wire between trunk main switch and trunk opener cancel switch.
    • On White/Black wire between trunk opener cancel switch and ground.
If any circuit does not have continuity, repair as necessary and retest system. If all circuits have continuity, go to next step.
  4. Checking Trunk Motor & Circuit

Using fused jumper wires, connect battery voltage to trunk motor terminal No. 1 and connect trunk motor body to ground. See Fig 1. If motor operates, go to next step. If motor does not operate, replace trunk motor and retest system.

  5. Using DVOM, check continuity in White/Blue wire between trunk motor and body control ECU harness connector terminal B4-25. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit in White/Blue wire. If continuity does exist, go to next step.
  6. Testing Body Control ECU

Check all voltage inputs to body control ECU. See BODY CONTROL ECU  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If any voltage inputs are not as specified, repair affected circuit and retest system. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If all voltage inputs are as specified, substitute known-good body control ECU and retest system. If system now works properly, replace body control ECU. If system still does not work, recheck all related system wiring and connections.
