Test 8: Idle Switch Circuit
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE:
Ensure throttle position sensor adjustment and operation are normal. See TESTS W/CODES
article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Adjust or replace throttle position sensor as necessary.
- Remove left lower instrument panel cover. Locate Black Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) 16-pin connector below right side of steering column. Connect scan tool to DLC3 connector and check throttle valve opening percentages.
- With throttle valve fully opened, scan tool should read approximately 75 percent. With throttle valve fully closed, scan tool should read approximately 10 percent. If percentages are as specified, check for intermittents in harness or connector. Repair or replace as necessary. If percentages are not as specified, go to next step.
- Disconnect throttle position sensor 3-pin connector. Measure voltage between ground and throttle position sensor connector terminal No. 2 (middle terminal, Green/Black wire). If 4.5-5.5 volts exists, go to next step. If 4.5-5.5 volts do not exist, go to step 8).
- Measure resistance between throttle position sensor terminal No. 1 (Brown/Black wire) and terminal No. 2 (Green/Black wire). See Fig 1. If resistance is 2500-5900 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace throttle position sensor.
- Measure resistance between throttle position sensor terminal No. 1 (Brown/Black wire) and terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire). See Fig 1. Ensure resistance is 200-5700 ohms with throttle valve fully closed, and 2000-10,200 ohms with throttle valve fully opened. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace throttle position sensor.
- Remove glove box to access ECM. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect ECM connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect voltmeter positive lead to ECM connector terminal VTA (Black/Yellow wire) and negative lead to ECM connector terminal E2 (Brown/Black wire). Ensure 0.3-0.8 volt exists with throttle valve fully closed, and 2.7-5.2 volts exist with throttle valve fully opened.
- If voltage is as specified, replace ECM and retest system. If voltage is not as specified, check harness and connector between ECM and throttle position sensor. Repair as necessary.
- Remove glove box to access ECM. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect ECM connectors. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect voltmeter positive lead to ECM connector terminal 1/VCC (Green/Black wire) and negative lead to ECM connector terminal E2 (Brown/Black wire). If 4.5-5.5 volts exist, check harness and connector between ECM and throttle position sensor. Repair as necessary. If 4.5-5.5 volts do not exist, replace ECM and retest system.
