Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Access ECM behind center console, under passenger floor mat. Ensure ignition is off (LOCK position). Disconnect ECM harness connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminal KNK and ground. See Figure. If infinite resistance exists, go to step 3). If infinite resistance does NOT exist, go to next step.
  2. Remove knock sensor. Measure resistance between sensor terminal and sensor body. If infinite resistance exists, go to next step. If infinite resistance does NOT exist, replace knock sensor.
  3. Inspect circuit between knock sensor and ECM for open or short. See wiring diagram in the WIRING DIAGRAMS - 2.2L article. Repair as needed. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  4. Install known good knock sensor and retest. If Code 52 is no longer present, replace sensor. If Code 52 is still present, replace ECM and retest.
