Test 8: Idle Switch Circuit

NOTE: Ensure throttle position sensor adjustment and operation are normal. See TESTS W/CODES article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section for more information. Adjust or replace throttle position sensor as necessary.
  1. Remove CC ECU with connectors connected. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and ABS and TRAC ECM connectors. Turn ignition on and measure voltage. Using voltmeter positive lead, backprobe CC ECU connector terminal No. 23/IDL (Blue wire) and connect negative lead to ground. Ensure battery voltage exists with throttle valve fully opened and less than one volt exists with throttle valve fully closed. If voltage is as specified, go to test for next trouble code displayed. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) 4-pin Black connector. Measure resistance between connector terminals No. 1 (Brown wire) and No. 2 (Blue wire). Ensure one megohm resistance or more exists with throttle valve fully opened and less than 2 ohms exists with throttle valve fully closed. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace throttle position sensor.
  3. Connect TPS connector and disconnect CC ECU connector. Release accelerator pedal and ensure continuity exists between ground and CC ECU connector terminal No. 23/IDL (Blue wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in harness between CC ECU connector terminal No. 23/IDL or No. 21/IDL and terminal No. 2/IDL (2JZ-GE) or terminal No. 3/IDL (2JZ-GTE) of 4-pin throttle position sensor connector (Blue wire), or repair open between TPS and ground.
  4. Depress accelerator pedal and ensure no continuity exists between ground and CC ECU connector terminal No. 23/IDL. If continuity is not present, replace CC ECU and retest system. If continuity is present, repair short in harness between CC ECU connector terminal No. 23/IDL or No. 21/IDL and terminal No. 2/IDL (2JZ-GE) of 4-pin throttle position sensor connector, or repair short between TPS and ground.
