Wiper Does Not Operate

  1. CHECK BODY INTEGRATED UNIT SETTING (CUSTOMIZED SETTING)  .

    Using Subaru Select Monitor, display [Rain drop Detection Sensor Setting]. Ref. to BODY CONTROL (DIAGNOSTICS)>DATA MONITOR .

    Is the setting "Yes"?

    Yes  : Go to  2.

    No  : Set [Rain drop Detection Sensor Setting] to "Yes" with unit customizing.

  2. CHECK DTC  .

    Using the Subaru Select Monitor, read the DTC of body integrated unit, combination meter, VDC, and CAN system. Ref. to COMMON (dia)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) .

    Is a DTC detected for each system?

    Yes  : Perform a check according to the DTC.

    No  : Go to  3.

  3. CHECK DTC  .

    Read the DTCs for rain/light sensor using the Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to AUTOMATIC LIGHT AND WIPER (DIAGNOSTICS)>DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) .

    Is DTC detected?

    Yes  : Perform a check according to the DTC.

    No  : Go to  4.

  4. CHECK AMBIENT TEMPERATURE  .

    Check if the ambient temperature matches the operation condition of the auto wiper.

    NOTE: Working temperature: -10°C (-50°F) or more, 75°C (167°F) or less

    Does the ambient temperature match the operation condition?

    Yes  : Go to  5.

    No  : Check the wiper operation when the temperature becomes -10°C (-50°F) or more, or less than 75°C (167°F).

  5. CHECK DATA MONITOR (COMBINATION SWITCH (WIPER))  .
    1. Display the data of [Front wiper Low switch input], [Front wiper High switch input] and [Front wiper AUTO switch input] using Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to BODY CONTROL (DIAGNOSTICS)>DATA MONITOR .
    2. Operate the combination switch (wiper), and read the data of the combination switch (wiper).

    Does the combination switch (wiper) display change between ON <-> OFF according to the operation of the switch?

    Yes  : Go to  6.

    No  : Perform unit inspection of the combination switch (wiper).

  6. CHECK THE HARNESS BETWEEN BODY INTEGRATED UNIT AND COMBINATION SWITCH (FRONT WIPER)  .
    1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF, and disconnect the connectors of body integrated unit and combination switch (wiper).
    2. Check the harness between body integrated unit and combination switch (wiper).

      Connector & terminal 

      (i171) No. 21 - (i69) No. 4:

      (i81) No. 17 - (i69) No. 4:

      (i81) No. 1 - (i69) No. 3:

      (i81) No. 21 - (i69) No. 9:

    Is the inspection result OK?

    Yes  : Go to  7.

    No  : Repair or replace the harness.

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND FUSE BETWEEN COMBINATION SWITCH (FRONT WIPER) AND FUSE  .
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Check the voltage between combination switch (wiper) and chassis ground.

      Connector & terminal 

      (i69) No. 2 (+) - Chassis ground (-):

    Is the voltage 9 V or more?

    Yes  : Go to  8.

    No  : Check the fuse and harness, and repair or replace as necessary.

  8. CHECK DATA MONITOR (WIPER OUTPUT SIGNAL)  .
    1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF, and connect the connector between body integrated unit and combination switch (front wiper).
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Display the data of [Front wiper Low output] and [Front wiper High output] using Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to AUTOMATIC LIGHT AND WIPER (DIAGNOSTICS)>DATA MONITOR .
    4. Set the combination switch (wiper) to the AUTO position.

    Does the data display change as ON <-> OFF when pouring water to the rain sensor detection surface?

    Yes  : Go to  9.

    No  : Replace the sensor assembly rain.

  9. CHECK HARNESS BETWEEN BODY INTEGRATED UNIT AND WIPER RELAY UNIT  .
    1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF, and disconnect the connectors of body integrated unit and wiper relay unit.
    2. Check the harness between body integrated unit and wiper relay unit.

      Connector & terminal 

      (B280) No. 6 - (B409) No. 2:

      (B281) No. 13 - (B410) No. 3:

      (B281) No. 12 - (B410) No. 1:

    Is the inspection result OK?

    Yes  : Go to  10.

    No  : Repair or replace the harness.

  10. CHECK HARNESS BETWEEN WIPER RELAY UNIT AND CHASSIS GROUND  .

    Check the harness between wiper relay unit and chassis ground.

    Connector & terminal 

    (B410) No. 2 - Chassis ground:

    Is the resistance 10 Ω or less?

    Yes  : Go to  11.

    No  : Repair or replace the harness.

  11. CHECK POWER SUPPLY OF WIPER RELAY UNIT  .
    1. Disconnect the connectors of the wiper relay unit and the motor assembly windshield wiper.
    2. Measure the voltage between the following terminals and chassis ground while turning the ignition switch to ON.

      Connector & terminal 

      (B409) No. 4 (+) - Chassis ground (-):

    Is the voltage 9 V or more?

    Yes  : Go to  12.

    No  : Check the fuse and harness, and repair or replace as necessary.

  12. CHECK HARNESS BETWEEN THE WIPER RELAY UNIT AND THE MOTOR ASSEMBLY WINDSHIELD WIPER  .
    1. Disconnect the connectors of body integrated unit and wiper relay unit.
    2. Check the harness between the wiper relay unit and the motor assembly windshield wiper.

      Connector & terminal 

      (B409) No. 3 - (B8) No. 3:

      (B409) No. 1 - (B8) No. 5:

    Is the resistance 10 Ω or less?

    Yes  : Go to  13.

    No  : Check the harness.

  13. CHECK WIPER RELAY UNIT AS A UNIT  .

    Check the wiper relay unit, Ref. to WIPER AND WASHER SYSTEMS>Wiper Relay Unit>INSPECTION .

    Is the inspection result of wiper relay unit OK?

    Yes  : Check the wiper motor assembly.

    No  : Replace the wiper relay unit.
