Code 41

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect AB24 and AB25. See Figure. Connect connector AB24 to test harness "F" (98299FC010), connector 1F. See Figure. Connect Air Bag Resistor (98299PA040) to test harness "F", connector 3F. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light goes off after 7 seconds and does not come back on after 30 seconds, replace passenger side impact air bag module and go to step  10. See SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light does not function as described, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 20 seconds. Disconnect air bag resistor from test harness "F". Disconnect connector AB18 from air bag control module and connect it to test harness "I" (98299FC040) or I2 (98299FC041), connector 1I. Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 7 and test harness "F" connector 3F, terminal No. 3. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace side impact air bag harness and go to step  10.
  3. Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 9 and harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace side impact air bag harness and go to step  10.
  4. Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 7 and terminal No. 9. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace side impact air bag harness and go to step  10.
  5. Measure resistance between test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3 and terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace side impact air bag harness and go to step  10.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 3. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace side impact air bag harness and go to step  10.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "F", connector 3F, terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace side impact air bag harness and go to step  10.
  8. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 7. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace side impact air bag harness. Go to step  10.
  9. Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 9. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace air bag control module and go to next step. See CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace side impact air bag harness. Go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off and disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect system components and activate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Clear air bag system codes. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
