LINE INSTALLED CRUISE CONTROL TEST PROCEDURES

TESTING PROCEDURES FOR 1983 AND 1984 LINE INSTALLED CRUISE CONTROL

The required components are:

1983/1984 Line Installed Cruise Control (white) tester harness. SOA 386C403.
Specific Cruise Control Module Tester Box SOA 386C401.
A continuous vacuum source. Such as an A/C evacuation pump, (a hand operated pump will not create enough vacuum).

Ensure all connections (vehicle and tester harness) make good electrical contact to avoid erratic test results.

If the light(s) on the module tester box do not respond as they should, a more complete inspection of that particular circuit (including wire continuity), is necessary.

CAUTION: Do not operate engine with the tester installed. Doing so could result in a wide-open throttle condition.

Remove driver's side underdash trim panel. Disconnect the vehicle harness from the cruise control module located under the dash on the driver's side.
Connect cruise test harness to vehicle harness. Connect the module tester box (Specific) to cruise test harness.
With ignition switch OFF, and the cruise control main switch OFF, the lights on the tester should all be OFF.
On automatic and manual transmission vehicles, place the transmission selector in the NEUTRAL position.
Turn ignition switch ON. Caution: Do not start engine. The tester BRAKE/CLUTCH and TACH lights should go ON.

Push the cruise control switch (On/Off) to the ON position. The cruise control light on the steering column should go ON. The tester lights should indicate the following:

Actuate RESUME, SET and COAST functions, using the control handle. As each function is actuated, the RESUME, SET, or OFF tester lights should go ON.
Press brake pedal. The BRAKE/CLUTCH tester light should go OFF and the BRAKE LIGHTS tester light (on auxiliary box) should go ON.
If manual transmission vehicle, depress clutch. The CLUTCH tester light (on auxiliary box) should go OFF.
If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, move the transmission selector lever from neutral position to drive position. The tester NEUTRAL light should go OFF. Return the selector to neutral position. The tester NEUTRAL light should go ON.
Note the condition (On or Off), of the tester speed light. Roll the vehicle forward or backward several feet. The SPEED light should flash ON and OFF alternately with the vehicle movement.
Actuate, in turn, the tester VAC and VENT buttons. The appropriate tester VAC or VENT light should go OFF and a clicking sound should be heard under the hood at the valve body, indicating valve actuation.
If any of the above checks do not give the proper tester light operation, check the appropriate component for malfunction and proper wiring.
NOTE: The remainder of the test is done under the hood. Remove the tester harness from inside the vehicle and bring around to the right front of the vehicle. It is not necessary to reconnect the module to the vehicle harness to continue testing.
Locate the actuator assembly (see Fig 2 ), and disconnect the vacuum hose and electrical connector leading to it. Connect a continuous vacuum source (Example: A/C evacuation pump) to the actuator assembly. Connect the tester harness (4-pin connector) to the actuator assembly. Connect the test harness power leads to the battery (red positive, black negative). The tester VAC, VENT, and SAFETY lights should go ON.
Depress the tester VENT and SAFETY buttons. The tester VENT and SAFETY lights should go OFF and a clicking sound from the actuator should be heard while the button is depressed.
Holding the SAFETY and VENT buttons depressed, momentarily actuate the tester VAC button. The tester VAC light should go OFF with button depressed and movement of the vehicle throttle should be noted at the carburetor. A clicking sound of the VAC valve in the actuator should also be noted.
Release the tester SAFETY button. A clicking sound from the actuator should be noted along with the throttle moving toward the closed position.
Depress the tester VENT and SAFETY buttons and momentarily actuate the tester VAC button to open the throttle. Release the tester VENT button. The tester VENT light should go ON. A clicking sound from the valve in the actuator should be heard, and the throttle should go closed.
Release the tester buttons. If any of the above checks do not give the proper tester light operation, check the appropriate component for malfunction and proper wiring.
Remove the tester harness leads from the battery, disconnect the tester harness and the vacuum source from the actuator assembly. Reconnect the vehicle harness and the vehicle vacuum line to the actuator.
If at this point all components check according to procedure, the cause of inoperation is the module. Install a new module and verify correction.

TESTING PROCEDURES FOR 1985/1986 LINE INSTALLED CRUISE CONTROL

The required components are:

1983/1984 Line Installed Cruise Control (white) tester harness SOA 386C403.
1985/1986 Line Installed Cruise Control (red) tester harness SOA 386C404.
Specific Cruise Control Module tester box SOA 386C401.

CAUTION: Do not operate engine with the tester installed.

Remove passenger side underdash trim panel and glove box assembly. Disconnect the vehicle harness from the cruise module located under the dash on the passenger side.
Connect 1985/1986 cruise tester harness to 1983/1984 cruise test harness and then to the vehicle wiring harness and the Specific Cruise Control module tester box. See Fig 3 .
With the ignition switch OFF and the cruise control main switch OFF, the lights on the tester should all be OFF.
On automatic and manual transmission vehicles, place the transmission selector in the NEUTRAL position.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
CAUTION: Do not start the engine.

NOTE: The tester TACH light should go ON.
Turn the cruise control switch to the ON position. The tester lights should indicate the following:

Actuate, in turn, the RESUME and SET buttons on the steering wheel. As each button is actuated, the RESUME and SET test light should go ON.
Press the vehicle brake pedal. The BRAKE/CLUTCH light should go OFF and the BRAKE LIGHTS light (on auxiliary box) should go ON.
If the vehicle has a manual transmission, depress the clutch. The CLUTCH tester light should go OFF. (Auxiliary Box).
If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, move the transmission selector lever from neutral position to drive position. The tester NEUTRAL light should go OFF. Return the selector to NEUTRAL position. The tester NEUTRAL light should go ON.
Note the condition (On or OFF), of the tester speed light. Roll the vehicle forward or backward several feet. The SPEED light should flash ON AND OFF alternately with vehicle movement.
Actuate, in turn, the tester VAC and VENT buttons. The appropriate tester VAC or VENT light should go OFF and a clicking sound should be heard from underhood indicating the valve movement in the throttle actuator. In addition, the sound of the vacuum pump should be heard when the VAC switch is depressed.
If any of the above checks do not give the proper test light operation, check the appropriate component for malfunction and proper wiring.
NOTE: The remainder of the test is done under the hood. Keep the test harness connected inside the vehicle and bring around to the right front of the vehicle.
Locate and disconnect the vehicle electrical connector to the throttle actuator assembly (white 6 pin connector). Attach the matching 6 pin connector of the test harness to the throttle actuator assembly connector. All the tester lights should be as indicated in Step 6, except that the Safety light should now be ON.
Depress the tester VENT button. The tester VENT light should go OFF and a clicking sound from the actuator should be heard.
Depress the SAFETY button. The sound of the vacuum pump operating should be heard. Keep the SAFETY button depressed until the vacuum pump operation has stopped. This indicates that the vacuum reservoir switch has operated (reservoir is evacuated), and that the safety valve is closed. (If the pump does not operate, momentarily depress VAC button and repeat this step).
Holding the SAFETY and VENT buttons depressed, momentarily actuate the tester VAC button. The tester VAC light should go OFF momentarily as the VAC button is depressed. In addition, the vacuum pump operation should be heard and the throttle should move toward the open position.
Release the tester SAFETY button. The throttle should move toward the closed position.
Depress the tester SAFETY and VENT button and momentarily actuate the tester VAC button to open the throttle. Release the tester VENT button. The tester VENT light should go ON, and a clicking sound from the valve in the actuator should be heard, and the throttle should move toward the open position.
Release all the tester buttons. If any of the above checks do not give the proper tester light operation, check the appropriate component for malfunction and proper wiring.
Disconnect the tester harness from the actuator assembly. Reconnect the vehicle harness to the actuator assembly.
If at this point all components check according to procedure, the cause of inoperation is the module. Install a new module and verify correction.
