NOTES ON REPLACEMENT OF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH

COMPLAINT

Malfunctions while switching.
Leakage into the brake module after replacement of the brake light switch.
Follow-up repairs or malfunction after replacement of brake light switch.

CAUSE

Re. 1. This fault could be attributable to other components besides the brake light switch. For this reason it is absolutely necessary to determine the exact component causing the problem. Under no circumstances should a brake light switch be replaced on suspicion without a clear diagnosis, as this leads to follow-up repairs and to increased warranty and goodwill costs.

Re. 2. The Brake Module Cover was not replaced following work on the brake light switch.

Re. 3. Did not correctly adjust brake light switch; or misdiagnosis resulted in erroneously replacing the brake light switch.

REMEDY

Re. 1. Perform complete fault diagnosis or function test of the brake light switch with the aid of DAS. DAS, menu item ESP/Actual values/Sensors. Check the signals "Brake light" and "Brake signal". If the functions, signals and setting of the brake light switch are OK, the diagnosis should be extended to other equipment.

Re. 2. Replace the Brake Module Cover following work on the brake light switch.

Re. 3. Before the brake light switch is replaced, measure the pedal travel up to the point at which the brake lights light up. See WIS REFERENCES for measurement procedure. If replacement is necessary, the new brake light switch must be adjusted.

Effective immediately, whenever a brake light switch is replaced, the following must be included with the warranty parts return:

The fault memory printout of the ESP control unit
The removed part
The measured pedal travel up to the point at which the brake lights light up must be recorded on the fault memory printout.
