General

Engine oil is led through the for engine lubrication to minimize wear and to prevent overheating of the engine.

Function

The oil pump driven by the crankshaft delivers the engine oil out of the oil pan to the oil filter. The engine oil then passes from there via the supply ducts in the engine block to the individual lubrication points. The most important lubrication points on the engine are areas on the crankshaft and camshafts.

The engine oil wets the lubrication points and drips back into the oil pan.

Camshaft adjustment of the intake camshafts is also achieved using pressure generated by the oil pump.

To do this the adjustable camshaft timing solenoid is actuated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) and passes the oil pressure according to requirements via the oil lines "advanced" or "retarded" to the camshaft adjuster.

As the motor speed increases the rpm of the oil pump increases which leads to an increase in the oil pressure. This is limited by the pressure limiting valve so that excess delivered engine oil flows back into the oil pan.

A baffle plate is mounted between the oil pan and crankcase to optimize the power output of the engine which prevents immersion of the crankshaft in the engine oil remaining in the oil pan. This reduces the resistance at the crankshaft and also prevents foaming of the engine oil.
