Inspection Procedure

HINT:

  1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream ON.
    4. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
    5. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      OK 

      IGNITION SWITCH POSITION AND STARTER SIGNAL REFERENCE

      Ignition Switch Position Starter Signal
      ON OFF
      START ON

    NG: Go to step 2 

    OK :  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 

  2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Disconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
    2. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    4. Turn the Techstream ON.
    5. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
    6. Check the value displayed on the Techstream when the ignition switch is turned to ON.

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Starter Signal Proceed to
      Remains ON A
      OFF (M/T models) B
      OFF (A/T models) C
    7. Reconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.

    B:  Go to step  4

    C:  Go to step  8

    A: Go to next step 

  3. INSPECT ECM (STA TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition Proceed to
      STA (A21-48) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V A
      Below 1.5 V B
    5. Reconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
    6. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    B : REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

    A : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - ST RELAY - CLUTCH START SWITCH OR PNP SWITCH) 

  4. INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH 
    1. Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      1 - 2 OFF (free) 10 kΩ or higher

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Result Proceed to
      Outside standard range A
      Within standard range B
    3. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.

    B:  Go to step  6

    A: Go to next step 

  5. REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH 
    1. Replace the clutch start switch (See REMOVAL ).

    NEXT 

  6. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH 
    1. Remove the ignition switch.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      All Terminals LOCK 10 kΩ or higher
      2 (AM1) - 3 (ACC) ACC Below 1 Ω
      2 (AM1) - 3 (ACC) - 4 (IG1) ON
      7 (AM2) - 6 (IG2)
      2 (AM1) - 4 (IG1) - 1 (ST1) START
      7 (AM2) - 6 (IG2) - 8 (ST2)
    3. Reinstall the ignition switch.

    NG : REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. INSPECT ECM (NSW TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition Proceed to
      NSW (B33-452) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V A
      Below 1.5 V B
    5. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.
    6. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    B : REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

    A : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - CLUTCH START SWITCH - ECM) 

  8. INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH 
    1. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR SHORT

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      4 - 5 Shift lever position except P and N 10 kΩ or higher
      2 - 5 All shift lever positions (P, R, N, D and S) 10 kΩ or higher

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Result Proceed to
      Short between 4 and 5 A
      Short between 2 and 5 B
      Within standard range C
    3. Reconnect the PNP switch connector.

    B : REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )

    C:  Go to step  10

    A: Go to next step 

  9. REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH 
    1. Replace park/neutral position switch (See REMOVAL ).

    NEXT 

  10. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH 
    1. Remove the ignition switch.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      All Terminals LOCK 10 kΩ or higher
      2 (AM1) - 3 (ACC) ACC Below 1 Ω
      2 (AM1) - 3 (ACC) - 4 (IG1) ON
      7 (AM2) - 6 (IG2)
      2 (AM1) - 4 (IG1) - 1 (ST1) START
      7 (AM2) - 6 (IG2) - 8 (ST2)
    3. Reinstall the ignition switch.

    NG : REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step 

  11. INSPECT ECM (NSW TERMINAL VOLTAGE) 
    1. Disconnect the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition Proceed to
      NSW (B33-452) - Body ground Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V A
      Below 1.5 V B
    5. Reconnect the PNP switch connector.
    6. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    B : REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

    A : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (IGNITION SWITCH - PNP SWITCH - ECM)
