Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
- Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Did DTC P0351 also fail this ignition? If yes, go to step 9. If no, go to next step.
- Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the Ignition Control Module (ICM). Measure the voltage between the IC timing control circuit and a good ground with a DVOM. Crank the engine. Does the voltage vary within 0-5 volts? If yes, go to step 6. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Measure the voltage between the IC timing control circuit and a good ground with a DVOM. Does the voltage measure less than 3.5 volts? If yes, go to step 8. If no, go to step 7.
- Test the IC timing control circuit for high resistance. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 11.
- Test the IC timing control circuit for a short to voltage. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 10.
- Test the IC timing control circuit for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 10.
- Test for a short between the IC timing control circuit and IC timing control "B" circuit. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ECM . Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 12.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the ICM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 14. If no, go to step 13.
- Replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - ION article. Perform ECM relearn procedure. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE REPROGRAMMING under PROGRAMMING. After replacing ECM, go to step 14.
- Replace ICM. See ELECTRONIC IGNITION MODULE under IGNITION SYSTEMS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - ION article. After replacement, go to next step.
- Using a scan tool, clear the DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- Using a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
