Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Turn ignition OFF for 10 seconds. Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor status of DTC P0403. If DTC has run and failed LAST TEST, go to next step. If DTC has run and passed LAST TEST, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Check ENGINE CNTL 1 fuse located in underhood fuse block. Replace as necessary. Disconnect EGR solenoid harness connector. Connect a test light between EGR solenoid harness connector terminals "A" (Black/White wire) and "E" (Orange wire). Using scan tool, command EGR solenoid to a 100 percent duty cycle. If test light illuminates, go to step  4 . If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
  3. Connect test light between ground and EGR solenoid harness connector terminal "E" (Orange wire). If test light does not illuminate, repair open in Orange wire between EGR solenoid and fuse block. If test light illuminates, check for open in Black/White wire between EGR solenoid and ECM. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, check connectors. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ECM.
  4. Remove test light. Using DVOM, measure voltage at EGR harness connector terminal "A" (Black/White wire). If 2.6-4.6 volts are present, check EGR solenoid connector. If connector is okay, replace EGR valve. If 2.6-4.6 volts are not present, replace ECM.
