Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor MAF SENSOR. If voltage reading is more than 4.8 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not more than 4.8 volts, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Disconnect MAF sensor harness connector. MAF sensor is located on air cleaner assembly. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, observe MAF SENSOR. If voltage reading is less than 0.14 volt, go to next step. If voltage reading is not less than 0.14 volt, go to step  4 .
  3. Using DVOM, measure voltage between MAF sensor harness connector terminals No. 3 (Purple/White wire) and No. 4 (Gray wire). If 4-6 volts are present, check MAF sensor harness connector. If connector is okay, replace MAF sensor. If voltage is not 4-6 volts, go to step  7 .
  4. Using a DVOM, check voltage on MAF sensor harness connector terminal No. 5 (Yellow wire). If voltage reading is a 4-6 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not 4-6 volts, go to step  6 .
  5. Check for short between Gray wire and Yellow wire. Check for short between Tan wire and Yellow wire. Repair as necessary.
  6. Check for short to voltage in Yellow wire, or short between Orange wire and Yellow wire. Repair as necessary.
  7. Using DVOM, measure voltage at MAF sensor harness connector terminal No. 4 (Gray wire). If voltage is 4-6 volts, check for open in Purple/White wire between MAF sensor and ECM. If voltage is not 4-6 volts, diagnose fault in 5-volt reference "A" circuit (Gray wire).
