Shift/Selector Cable (On-Vehicle): Removal

Disable SIR system. For 2000 models, see DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . For 2001 models, see DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . For 2002 models, see DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Remove air cleaner housing and duct assembly. Refer to AIR CLEANER HOUSING AND DUCT ASSEMBLY .

Remove small retainers at cable ends.
Disconnect the cable ends from the shift control housing.
Remove large cable to clutch housing retainers.

NOTE: Do not drag cable boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.
Lift cable out of clutch housing bracket.

Remove shifter control assembly. Refer to SHIFTER CONTROL ASSEMBLY (ON-VEHICLE) .
IMPORTANT: Carpet is held together by hook-and-loop fasteners.
Separate carpeting at front of dash under shift cables.
Remove the retainers, on both sides of the cable pass-through opening, holding the sound deadening material.
Roll back the sound deadening material at the front of dash to gain access to the cable pass through grommet.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

IMPORTANT: When removing and installing shift cables, it is helpful to have a second person inside vehicle to guide cables and prevent them from being tangled.
For service replacement shift cables, perform the following steps:
1. Raise vehicle.
2. Remove cable grommet from front of dash by removing the two retaining nuts and pushing the grommet and retaining plate into the vehicle.
3. Lower vehicle and remove cables.
For production shift cables, perform the following steps:

1. Place a large flat blade screwdriver against the driver's side of the cable pass through grommet as shown.
2. Push grommet toward passenger side of vehicle and outward to disengage grommet from floor pan.
  CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

3. Raise vehicle.
4. Remove cable and cable pass-through grommet from the outside of the vehicle.
