Service Information on Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) Connector Retainer

MODELS AFFECTED

1996 Saturns built before and including VIN TZ106851

PURPOSE

Some SDMs installed in vehicles built before and including VIN TZ106851 were built with either a "red" or "black" SDM-R retainer (also called a connector position assurance [CPA] retainer) and a wiring harness strap, located across the connector and the retainer. See Fig 1 .

If servicing a vehicle built before and including VIN TZ106851 and it is equipped with a red retainer, the red retainer must be replaced with a black retainer (P/N 12191277). After the black retainer is installed, it is not necessary to install a new wiring harness strap. If the vehicle is equipped with a black retainer, it is not necessary to replace the wiring harness strap if the connector is removed during service.

NOTE: If a black retainer is not available from service parts and the red retainer is installed, a wiring harness strap MUST BE installed as shown to prevent the red retainer from working its way out of the connector, causing the connector to disconnect. If the connector does disconnect from the SDM, the AIR BAG telltale will illuminate and a DTC 61 may be set in the SDM memory.

IMPORTANT: Vehicles built after the above mentioned VIN range are built with a black retainer without the wiring harness strap and do not require the installation of a wiring harness strap after service.
