PROGRAMMING INTEGRATED CENTRAL ELECTRONICS (ICE) ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM)

APPLICATION

Model(s): 1994 SAAB 900 (5 Door)

Group: Electrical

Bulletin No.: 11/93-0405

Date: November 1993

SERVICE INFORMATION

When fitting a new Integrated Central Electronics (ICE) Electronic Control Module (ECM) to a vehicle, you must program this component using ISAT. See Fig 1 . Follow the "US" program, noting that some functions are required by Federal Law.

The routine for programming via ISAT is designed in such a way that all parameters are programmed in a loop. This is done to make certain all necessary programming is indeed done. See Table l.

DIAGNOSIS

For diagnostic purposes use the following information to verify that proper programming has indeed taken place on a 1994 900 door model.

Audible Key Warning

With: USA. Warning Chime sounds when key left in ignition. (Required by USA regulation)

Without: No Warning Chime sounds.

LIGHT VARIANT

Alt 1: All other markets and USA. Headlights will function only when the switch is turned on to full clockwise position and ignition is on.

Alt 2: Sweden (SE). Headlights are on all the time with the switch either to the far left or far right but are not on when the switch is in the parking light position.

Alt 3: Canada (CA). Headlights are on whenever ignition is on, regardless of light switch position.

NOTE: For customers who want Daytime Running Lights, install Fuse #15 (20 amp). If Fuse 15 is not installed, Daytime Running Lights will be "ON" when the switch is in the Parking Light Position but not "ON" when the switch is in the "OFF" position. Correction to Owner's Manual, the correct Fuse is 20 amp.

BRAKE LAMP MESSAGE

With: European. Vehicles are programmed with the "Test Brakes" Brake Lamp Message to meet European Regulations. "Test Brakes" will light on SID every time the vehicle is started and will remain lit until the brake pedal is tapped.

Without: USA. Nothing occurs.

FOG LIGHT VARIANT

Alt 1: European. Fog Lights work with Parking Lights, Low and High Beams.

Alt 2: USA and Canada. Fog Lights work with Parking Lights (if not programmed for Daytime Running Lights) and Low Beams but not High Beams.

Alt 3: Currently not used by any market. Fog Lights work with Parking Lights and High Beams but not Low Beams.

FAN VARIANT

One-Step: Not for any USA market vehicle. No obvious problems if this program selected by mistake. Fan will still run at both speeds.

Two-Step: USA

HIGH POSITION (HI POS) BRAKE LIGHT

With: USA and Canada. SID will display a warning message if the bulb should burn out.

Without: Other markets. The High Position Brake Light will still work if this is programmed but SID will not alert driver to when a bulb is burned out.

ENGINE ALTERNATIVE

The Integrated Central Electronics (ICE) needs to know which engine management system it is communicating with in order to adjust the idle speed as the AC Compressor cycles on and off. If the incorrect engine type is programmed, it may create a driveability complaint when the AC Compressor is operating.
