Circuit/System Testing
- With the ignition OFF, inspect the engine wiring harness carrying the CMP sensor circuits for the following conditions:
- Close routing of secondary ignition wires
- Close routing of aftermarket electrical equipment
- Close to solenoids, motors and relays
- Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between both 5-volt reference circuits and the negative terminal of the battery.
- If more than 5.2 volts, test the affected 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage or faulty ECM.
- If less than 4.8 volts, test the affected 5-volt reference circuit for an open or short to ground or a faulty ECM.
- Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between both signal circuits and the negative terminal of the battery.
- If more than 5.2 volts, test the affected signal circuit for a short to voltage or faulty ECM.
- If less than 4.8 volts, test the affected signal circuit for an open or short to ground or a faulty ECM.
- With the ignition ON, the engine OFF and the sensor disconnected, install a test lamp between the signal circuit and the negative terminal of the battery.
- If the test lamp does illuminate, test the signal circuit of the affected sensor for a short to voltage or a faulty ECM.
- With the ignition ON, the engine OFF and the sensor disconnected, install a test lamp between the low reference circuit and battery voltage.
- If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the low reference circuit of the affected sensor for an open, high resistance or a faulty ECM.
- With the ignition ON, engine OFF and a jumper wire connected to ground, probe the CMP sensor signal circuit repeatedly. The CMP active counter parameter should increment.
- If the CMP active counter does not increment, test for a faulty ECM.
- Inspect the camshaft reluctor wheel for damage.
- If damage is found, replace as necessary.
- If all circuits test normal, replace the CMP sensor.
