Diagnostic System Check

  1. Did you review DESCRIPTION & OPERATION? If so. go to next step. If not, go to DESCRIPTION & OPERATION  .
  2. Install a scan tool. Does the scan tool power up? If so, go to next step. If not, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. NOTE: Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.
  4. Turn ignition on. Attempt to establish communication with the HVAC Control Module, BCM and PCM. Does the scan tool communicate with the control modules? If so, go to next step. If not, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  5. NOTE: The engine may start during the following step. Turn engine off as soon as you have observed the Crank Power Mode.
  6. Access the CLASS 2 POWER MODE in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the IGNITION SWITCH POWER MODE parameter. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions? If so, go to next step. If not, go to POWER MODE MISMATCH under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  7. NOTE: Determine if the HVAC Control Module, BCM or PCM have set DTCs which may affect HVAC operation are present.
  8. Select the display DTCs function on the scan tool for the HVAC Control Module, BCM and PCM. Does the scan tool display any DTCs? If so, go to next step. If not, go to TROUBLESHOOTING  .
  9. NOTE: The presence of DTCs which begin with "U" indicate some other module is not communicating. The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed.
  10. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "U"? If so, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE under SYSTEM TESTS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If not, go to next step.
  11. NOTE: Answer YES if the first 3 characters of the DTC name begins with B10; regardless of the last 2 characters.
  12. Does the scan tool display DTC B10XX? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . If not, go to next step.
  13. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "B" that are associated with the charging system? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . If not, go to next step.
  14. Does the scan tool display any DTCs which begin with a "P" that are associated with the HVAC system? If so, go to DIAGNOSTIC TESTS  . If not, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
