Fuel Pressure Regulator: Installation

  1. Install the small "O" ring and then the large "O" ring into the fuel rail. Lubricate the "O" rings with clean engine oil before installation. Install the fuel pressure regulator taking care not to disturb the "O" rings. Install the fuel pressure regulator retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Connect the vacuum pipe to the fuel pressure regulator.
  2. Inspect for leaks by using the following procedure.
    • Turn ignition on for 2 seconds.
    • Turn ignition off for 10 seconds.
    • Turn ignition on.
    • Check for fuel leaks.

    CAUTION: Connect the fuel return line before tightening the regulator attaching screw in order to prevent the regulator from rotating. Rotation of the regulator could damage the retainer and spacer bracket and lead to a fuel leak at the regulator inlet.
  1. Inspect the filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator. Lubricate the new pressure regulator inlet "O" ring with clean engine oil and install on the regulator inlet. Lubricate the new fuel return pipe "O" ring with clean engine oil. Install the fuel return pipe "O" ring. Connect the fuel return pipe to the regulator. Install the new retainer and spacer bracket into the slot on the fuel rail.
  2. Install the pressure regulator to the fuel rail. Tighten the fuel return pipe fitting to specification. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line. Install the pressure regulator attaching screw and tighten to specification. Inspect and verify that the retainer and spacer bracket is engaged in the slots in the fuel rail. Grasp and pull on the regulator to ensure that the regulator is properly seated.
  3. Inspect for leaks by using the following procedure.
    • Turn ignition on for 2 seconds.
    • Turn ignition off for 10 seconds.
    • Turn ignition on.
    • Check for fuel leaks.
