Preliminary Check: Notes

  1. Incorrect operation of cruise control system may be caused by mechanical, electrical or vacuum system problems. Check for any codes. If any codes are present, see TESTS W/CODES article.
  2. Perform a visual inspection to ensure there are no bare, broken, or disconnected wires or any pinched, damaged or disconnected vacuum hoses. Start engine and check for vacuum at cruise control servo.
  3. Ensure servo and throttle linkage operate smoothly and servo cable is properly adjusted. Cruise Control Tester (J-34185-B) may be used for diagnosing electrical portion of cruise control system. If electrical system test specifies replacement of component, perform vacuum system testing before replacing component.
  4. Check cruise control switch wires for damage where they exit multifunction lever. If wires are pinched, replace multifunction lever. Perform initial symptom checks listed before proceeding to electrical system testing.
