Code 88 - Red Brake Warning Light Circuit Shorted To Battery: Notes

This test isolates a short to battery between EBCM/EBTCM and Red BRAKE warning light or an open driver circuit that does not allow Red BRAKE warning light to be illuminated by EBCM/EBTCM. This will only occur if an ABS fault is detected that may degrade base brake operation.

Code 88 can set only at beginning of 3 second bulb check if EBCM/EBTCM detects battery voltage on BRAKE warning light control circuit. Code will be stored but ABS will not be disabled.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to numbers on diagnostic chart. Use only 10-megohm (minimum) DVOM for all voltage and resistance tests.
  1. Identifies if ground circuit to BRAKE warning light is being completed by a source other than the EBCM/EBTCM.
  2. Identifies if malfunction is currently present.
  3. This test indicates if voltage is being supplied from a source other than power supply from fuse block.
  4. Ensures malfunction was not due to physical damage of circuitry.
  5. This step checks if Code 86 is also set.
