Compressor Servicing

  1. Compressor drive components (clutch and pulley assembly, clutch coil, and shaft seal assembly) can be serviced with compressor on car although it will be more convenient to remove the compressor and mount it on a fixture on the bench for service.
  2. Completely discharge refrigerant from system. If compressor is being removed from car, disconnect refrigerant lines and tape or cap lines and service ports immediately to prevent loss of oil or entry of foreign material and moisture. Keep compressor horizontal with sump downward and do not rotate shaft.
  3. With compressor on bench, remove sump plug and drain oil into a measuring container so that amount of oil can be checked and noted so that correct amount of new refrigerant oil can be installed later. Reinstall sump plug.
  4. Before installing compressor on car, remove sump plug and install correct amount of new refrigerant oil as follows:
Condition Amount drained Amount to install
Compressor not operable. More than 11/2 ozs. Same amount
Less than 11/2 ozs. 6 ozs.
Compressor Operable (1) More than 4 ozs. Same amount
Less than 4 ozs. 6 ozs.
(1) After operation to stabilize system.
