DTC P1686: No Skim Bus Message Received

NOTE: For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For circuit identification and wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, PCM must be reprogrammed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING .
NOTE: Smart Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) bus is monitored with ignition on and continuously during engine operation. DTC will set in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) memory when SKIM status bus message was not received from the SKIM for 20 seconds. Possible causes for DTC to set are: invalid SKIM KEY, defective PCM, defective connector or defective wiring.
  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for any PCM DTCs. If DTC P1686: NO SKIM BUS MESSAGE RECEIVED is present, go to next step. If DTC P1686: NO SKIM BUS MESSAGE RECEIVED is not present, go to step  4.
  2. Using scan tool, attempt to access SKIM. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, then check for DTCs. If scan tool communicates with SKIM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with scan tool, go to BUS +/- SIGNAL OPEN FROM SKIM under COMMUNICATIONS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - NEON article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment, between air cleaner and radiator. Inspect connectors for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, disconnect SKIM connector. SKIM is located left center below instrument panel. Measure resistance of Violet/Yellow wire between SKIM harness connector terminal No. 2 and PCM connector terminal No. 59. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1A . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in PCI bus circuit between PCM and SKIM. Perform TEST VER-1A . See DATA LINK CONNECTORS article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  4. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect related connectors and wiring harness for damage. Repair connectors and wiring harness as necessary. If connectors and wiring harness are okay, no problem is indicated at this time. Check for any related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that may apply.
