DTC P1486: EVAP Leak Monitor Pinched Hose Found
NOTE:
EVAP leak monitor is monitored immediately after a cold start with ambient temperature of 40-90°F (4.4-32.0°C) and engine coolant temperature within 10°F (6°C) of ambient temperature. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if no airflow through EVAP system is detected by EVAP leak monitor. Possible causes are: restricted fuel tank-to-EVAP canister vacuum hose, restricted leak detection pump or hose, EVAP purge solenoid-to-EVAP canister vacuum hose restricted, or restricted EVAP canister.
NOTE:
EVAP purge solenoid may also be referred to as proportional purge solenoid.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If global good trip counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 6. If global good trip counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step.
- Millers Evaporative System Testing Kit (6872A) and Gas Cap Tester (8382A) are used to perform evaporative system pressure test. Perform pressure pump self-test on evaporative system testing kit by using manufacture's instructions. Remove gas cap and install gas cap tester on filler pipe. Install gas cap on tester and pressure supply hose from evaporative system testing kit to fitting on gas cap tester. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Disconnect engine vacuum hose from vacuum hose fitting at Leak Detection Pump (LDP). LDP is located on bracket near passenger's side rear sway bar mount. Using vacuum pump, apply a constant 20 in. Hg vacuum to leak detection pump. An A/C recovery pump unit works well. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select LEAK DETECT PUMP TEST on scan tool. Read instructions on scan tool and then press ENTER. At LEAK DETECTION PUMP TEST, select #3 HOLD PSI. Set PRESSURE/HOLD valve on evaporative system testing kit to OPEN position and VENT valve to CLOSED position. Turn timer on and monitor gauge on evaporative system testing kit. When gauge reaches 14 in. of H2O vacuum, turn PRESSURE/HOLD valve to CLOSED position. Shut timer off. Disconnect hose at EVAP canister that goes to fuel tank. If pressure drops when hose is disconnected, go to next step. If pressure does not drop when hose is disconnected, repair obstruction in EVAP system between canister and fuel tank. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- Reconnect EVAP canister hose. Repressurize EVAP system. Set PRESSURE/HOLD valve on evaporative system testing kit to OPEN position and VENT valve to CLOSED position. Turn timer on and monitor gauge on evaporative system testing kit. When gauge reaches 14 in. of H2O vacuum, turn PRESSURE/HOLD valve to CLOSED position. Shut timer off. Disconnect LDP pressure hose at EVAP canister. If pressure drops when hose is disconnected, go to next step. If pressure does not drop when hose is disconnected, replace EVAP canister. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- Reconnect LDP pressure hose at EVAP canister. Repressurize EVAP system and set EVAP tester as in previous steps. Disconnect EVAP hoses at purge solenoid. If pressure drops when hoses are disconnected, go to next step. If pressure does not drop when hose is disconnected, repair or replace hoses to purge valve as necessary. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- Remove LDP pressure hose. LDP pressure hose connects between EVAP canister and LDP. Inspect hose for obstructions or damage. Repair or replace hose as necessary. Perform TEST VER-6A . If LDP hose is okay, replace LDP pump. Perform TEST VER-6A .
- At this time, conditions required to set DTC are not present. Inspect hoses, tubes and connections for EVAP system. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data while attempting to duplicate the condition that caused DTC to be set. Refer to Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for related problems. Using scan tool, perform LDP MONITOR TEST. If monitor fails, further diagnosis is necessary to find leaking component. Condition does not exist at this time. If monitor passes, condition does not exist at this time. Repair system as necessary. Perform TEST VER-6A .
CAUTION:
When performing test procedures, keep lighted cigarettes, sparks, flames or other ignition sources away from test area. Ensure test area is well ventilated. Ensure fuel tank contains 3-9 gallons of fuel before performing the following test procedures. Pressurizing fuel tank with less than 3 gallons of fuel may result in an explosion caused by ignition of the fumes. Wear safety glasses when performing test procedures.
