FUEL (MPI) SYSTEM - Service Adjustment Procedures (1988 Colt)

  1. 2)
Observing the following caution items, insert a paper clip to the connector (3-pin) of the harness for tachometer, and connect an rpm gauge. See Fig 1 .
CAUTION: The connector contact should not be separated.

The paper clip should be inserted along the terminal surface.

  2. 3)
    Turn ignition switch to "LOCK"
  3. 4)
Disconnect the harness connectors from the ECU.
  4. 5)
Set check switch of the ECI checker to OFF.
  5. 6)
Set select switch of the ECI checker to A.
  6. 7)
Connect white color connectors, with labeled "CHECKER" of the ECI HARNESS CONNECTOR F to the connectors of ECI checker and then connect ECI HARNESS CONNECTOR F to the ECU and the harness connectors. See Fig 2 .
  7. 8)
Connect voltmeter to extension terminals of ECI checker and then change extension switch from CHECK METER down to EXTENSION position. See Fig 3 .
CAUTION: Use an accurate digital voltmeter.
  8. 9)
Set the select switch of ECI checker to "A" and check switch to 3" respectively.
  9. 10)
Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not start the engine) and hold the switch in that position for 15 seconds or more to check that the ISC servo is set at the initial position (idle point).
NOTE: When the ignition switch is turned to ON the ISC servo extends to the fast idle position opening and in 15 seconds, it retracts and stops at the initial position.

Initial position: Position corresponding to idle opening, 0.9V motor position sensor output voltage.

  10. 11)
    Turn ignition switch to "LOCK".

Measurement of Resistance between Terminals

(see Fig 4 )

  1. Disconnect the injector connector.
  2. Measure resistance between terminals. Standard value: 2 - 3 ohm [at 20°C (68°F)]
  3. Install the injector connector.

Inspection of Injection State

  1. 1)
Remove the air intake pipe. See Fig 5 .
  2. 2)
Disconnect the high tension cable from the ignition coil

Inspection of Injector with Black Connector

  1. 3)
Observing through the air inlet of the injection mixer visually check injection state of the injector with black connector when the ignition switch is set to ST position. See Fig 6 . Judge the injector as normal unless the injection state is very poor.
  2. 4)
Turn the ignition switch to OFF and check the injector nozzle for leaks.

Inspection of Injector with Blue Connector

  1. 5)
Disconnect the injector harness of the blue connector.
  2. 6)
Connect the harness connected to the injector having black connector to the injector having blue connector.
CAUTION: Connect the harness with adequate slackness so that undue tension will not act on the harness when the engine is cranked.
  3. 7)
Observing through the air inlet of the injection mixer, visually check injection state of the injector with blue connector when the ignition switch is set to ST position. Judge the injector as normal unless the injection state is very poor.
  4. 8)
Turn the ignition switch to OFF and check the injector nozzle for leaks. See Fig 7 .

INSPECTION OF ISC MOTOR (DC MOTOR)

  1. Disconnect the ISC motor connector.
  2. Check continuity of the ISC motor coil. See Fig 8 .
    ISC MOTOR COIL CONTINUITY

    Measuring Terminals Continuity
    (1) - (4) Conductive [5 tO 11 ohm resistance at 20°C (68°F)]
  3. Connect 6V DC (four dry cells) between terminals (1) and (4) of the ISC motor connector and check that ISC servo operates. See Fig. 9.
  4. If not, replace ISC servo as an assembly.

SERVICE POINTS OF RE-ASSEMBLY

25. INSTALLATION OF SEAL RING

Make sure that the seal ring does not protrude from the groove. See Fig 10 .

16. INSTALLATION OF SEAL RING

Install a new seal ring in the mixing body. When fitting the seal ring, make sure that its flat side faces up. See Fig 11 .

13.12. INSTALLATION OF INJECTORS

(see Fig 12 )

  1. Fit a new O-ring and collar to the injector.
  2. Set the injector on the mixing body at correct position and push down firmly with a finger until it is seated.
IDENTIFICATION OF INJECTORS

Connector Color Position Orifice
Blue Right Large
Black Left Small

10. INSTALLATION OF DIAPHRAGM

Install the diaphragm in the injector holder in correct direction as shown in Fig. Fig 13 .

6. INSTALLATION OF FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR

Fit a new O-ring to the regulator. See Fig 14 .

If abnormal:

After a three-second steady illumination the illumination repeats at two-second cycles. An illumination time of 1.5 seconds is "1" and an illumination time of 0.5 second is "0", the malfunction code is thus indicated by the combination of five "1" and "0" signals. See Fig 15 .
