Air Bag System Diagnostic System Check

WARNING: Vehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  1. Observe air bag indicator while turning ignition switch to RUN position. If air bag indicator flashes 7 times, go to next step. If air bag indicator does not flash 7 times, diagnose air bag system problem.   2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST G: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Try to establish scan tool communication with SIR system Sensing And Diagnostic Module (SDM). If communication with SDM is established, go to next step. If communication with SDM is not established, go to TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Select DISPLAY DTC function for SDM. Record all displayed DTCs and status of displayed DTCs. If any DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If no DTCs are displayed, system is okay.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", go to TEST F: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, perform DTC B1000: CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
