Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
NOTE: If DTC P0412 or P0418 is also set, repair DTC before continuing with this test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  2. Start engine. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, command AIR pump and AIR solenoid ON. Using scan tool, observe HO2S 1 voltage. If voltage is less than 50 millivolts, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.  If voltage is 50 millivolts or more, turn ignition off and go to next step.
  3. Check AIR system for pinched, kinked, restricted, or leaking pipes, hoses or fittings. Check for restricted AIR pump inlet duct/hose/filter. AIR pump is located in left front of engine compartment, mounted to subframe. Check for pinched, kinked, restricted, or leaking vacuum lines. Check components for heat damage. If heat damage is indicated, replace AIR shutoff valve on the bank that damage is present. Right (rear) AIR shutoff valve is mounted to front of right (rear) cylinder head. Left (front) AIR shutoff valve is mounted to rear of left (front) cylinder head. If any problems are found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  42. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command AIR pump and AIR solenoid on and off. If AIR pump turns on and off with each command, go to next step. If AIR pump does not turn on and off with each command, go to step  11.
  5. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, command AIR solenoid on and off. If AIR solenoid turns on and off with each command, go to next step. AIR solenoid is located next to intake manifold, near right (rear) cylinder head. If AIR solenoid does not turn on and off with each command, go to step  14.
  6. Disconnect inlet pipe and/or hose from AIR shutoff valves. Using scan tool, command AIR pump and AIR solenoid on and off. If airflow is present at both hoses, go to next step. If airflow is not present at both hoses, go to step  16.
  7. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from AIR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnect vacuum hose. Start engine and allow it to idle. If vacuum reading is more than 10 in. Hg, go to next step. If vacuum reading is 10 in. Hg or less, go to step  33.
NOTE: Perform the following step for each AIR shutoff valve.
  8. Reconnect vacuum hose to AIR solenoid. Disconnect vacuum hose from AIR shutoff valve. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected vacuum hose. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, command AIR solenoid on. If scan tool indicates vacuum readings for both AIR solenoids is more than 10 in. Hg, go to next step. If scan tool indicates one or both vacuum readings is 10 in. Hg or less, go to step  26.
NOTE: Perform the following step for each AIR shutoff valve.
  9. Remove AIR shutoff valve. Connect a vacuum pump to AIR shutoff valve. Apply 10 in. Hg to valve. If vacuum holds for one minute, go to next step. If vacuum does not hold for one minute, go to step  37.
NOTE: Perform the following step for each AIR shutoff valve.
  10. Ensure vacuum is still applied to AIR shutoff valve. Attempt to blow air through inlet side of AIR shutoff valve. If air blows freely through AIR shutoff valve, go to step  27. If air does not blow freely through AIR shutoff valve, go to step  37.
  11. Disconnect AIR pump relay. AIR pump relay is located in underhood accessory fuse block (smallest fuse block), next to underhood fuse block. Underhood fuse block is mounted to strut tower on right side of engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe power feed circuits (Pink and Orange wires) at AIR pump relay harness connector in underhood accessory fuse block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If test light illuminates at both terminals, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate at both terminals, go to step  22.
  12. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe Brown wire at AIR pump relay harness connector in underhood accessory fuse block. Using scan tool, command AIR pump and AIR solenoid on and off. If test light turns on and off with each command, go to next step. If test light does not turn on and off with each command, go to step  17.
  13. Connect a fused 30-amp jumper wire between Orange and Red wires at AIR pump relay harness connector in underhood accessory fuse block. If AIR pump turns on, go to step  28. If AIR pump does not turn on, leave jumper wire connected and go to step  20.
  14. Disconnect AIR solenoid. Ensure ignition is on. Using a test light connected to ground, probe Pink wire at AIR solenoid harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  23.
  15. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe Pink/Black wire at AIR solenoid harness connector. Using scan tool, command AIR solenoid on and off.
