Diagnostic Procedures

  1. If powertrain diagnostic system check has already been performed, go to next step. If powertrain diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Check coolant level. If coolant level is okay, go to next step. If coolant level is low, check cooling system for leaks. Repair as necessary and top off coolant level.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. See Figure. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between Yellow and Black wires at ECT sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe ECT sensor temperature. If temperature reading is more than 280°F (138°C), go to step  7. If temperature reading is 280°F (138°C) or less, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect jumper wire. Reconnect jumper wire between ground and Yellow wire at ECT sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, observe ECT sensor temperature. If temperature reading is more than 280°F (138°C), go to next step. If temperature reading is 280°F (138°C) or less, go to step  6.
  5. Repair open or high resistance in Black wire between ECT sensor and terminal No. 12 at PCM C1 harness connector. See Figure. After repairs, go to step  10.
  6. Repair open or high resistance in Yellow wire between ECT sensor and terminal No. 26 at PCM C2 harness connector. See Figure. After repairs, go to step  10.
  7. Remove ECT sensor. Suspend ECT sensor and a thermometer in a pan of water. Place pan on a burner or hot plate. Measure resistance between ECT sensor terminals with sensor at specified temperature. See ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  9.
  8. Reinstall ECT sensor. Diagnose cooling system thermostat. Replace thermostat as necessary.
  9. Replace ECT sensor. After repairs, go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off. Reconnect all disconnected connectors. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC as specified in code enable criteria. If DTC runs and passes, go to next step. If DTC resets, go to step  2.
  11. Using scan tool, check for any other DTCs that are set. If no other DTCs are set, test is complete. If any other DTCs are set, repair DTCs as necessary. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
