Code 32, EGR Circuit Error - Models Using Manifold Vacuum, 2-Terminal Solenoid & BACKPRESSURE EGR: Notes

PCM controls a solenoid regulating vacuum to EGR valve. Normally closed solenoid prevents vacuum from passing until it is energized by PCM. A properly operating EGR will directly affect fuel integrator counts. With EGR valve open, integrator counts will be less than without EGR operation. If monitored integrator counts do not change with EGR commanded, Code 32 will set.

  1. Disconnect EGR solenoid ported vacuum line from EGR solenoid. Turn ignition on. Using jumper wire, connect DLC terminal "A" and "B". Using hand held vacuum pump, apply vacuum to ported vacuum side of EGR solenoid. If EGR valve moves, go to next step. If EGR valve does not move, go to step 5).
  2. Remove DLC jumper wire. If EGR valve closes, go to next step. If EGR valve does not close, disconnect solenoid electrical connector. If vacuum does not bleed off, replace solenoid. If vacuum bleeds off, check for short in Gray wire between solenoid terminal "B" and PCM terminal E1. Repair as necessary. If short does not exist, replace PCM.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect vacuum line at EGR valve. Using hand held vacuum pump, apply vacuum to EGR valve. If EGR valve does not move freely or hold vacuum for 20 seconds, replace EGR valve. If EGR valve moves freely and holds vacuum for 20 seconds, go to next step.
  4. Using hand held vacuum pump with gauge, apply vacuum to EGR valve. Start engine. EGR valve should close and vacuum drop. If EGR valve closes and vacuum drops, check vacuum lines. If no problems are found, system is okay. If vacuum does not drop, check EGR passages. If passages are plugged, clear passages. If passages are clear, replace EGR valve.
  5. Using hand held vacuum pump, apply vacuum to EGR side of EGR solenoid. If EGR valve moves, go to next step. If EGR valve does not move, replace vacuum line and/or EGR valve.
  6. Disconnect EGR solenoid electrical connector. Connect test light across harness connector terminals. Turn ignition on. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair connector or replace solenoid.
  7. Connect test light between harness connector terminal "A" and ground. If test light illuminates, check for open in Gray wire between solenoid terminal "B" and PCM terminal E1. Repair as necessary. If Gray wire is okay, replace PCM. If test light does not illuminate, repair battery feed to solenoid.
