Chart C-5, ESC System Check: Notes

NOTE: Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic chart.
  1. With engine idling, a knock signal should not be present at ECM, as detonation is not likely under no-load condition.
  2. Tapping on the engine lift hook bracket should simulate a knock condition. This will determine if knock sensor is capable of detecting detonation. If knock is not detected, try tapping on engine block near sensor. If knock is still not detected, replace sensor.
  3. If engine has an internal problem that is simulating a knock, the knock sensor may be responding to that condition. Internal problem should be diagnosed and repaired.
  4. This test determines if the knock sensor is faulty, or the ESC portion of the MEM-CAL is faulty. If MEM-CAL is at fault, ensure that it is properly installed and latched in place. If not properly installed, repair and retest.
