Diagnostic Procedure
- Turn ignition switch OFF. Loosen and retighten engine ground screws. See Figure.
- Disconnect accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor harness connector. See Figure. Turn ignition switch ON. Check voltage between APP sensor terminals No. 4 (Orange wire) and No. 6 (Red wire) and ground with CONSULT-II or tester. See Figure. APP sensor terminal No. 4 voltage should be approximately 2.5 volts and terminal No. 6 should be 5 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step 4. If voltage is not as specified, go to the next step.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin harness connector F68 and M161 terminals No. 4 (Red wire). See Figure. Connectors are located under instrument panel. For connector F68 location, see Figure. For connectors M161 location, see Figure.
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin harness connectors F55 and M162 terminal No. 6 (Orange wire). See Figure. Connectors are located under instrument panel. For connector F55 location, see Figure. For connector M162 location, see Figure.
- Check for open or short between ECM and accelerator pedal position sensor. See SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS
article in ELECTRICAL.
Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch OFF. Check harness continuity between APP sensor terminals No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire) and No. 3 (Black wire) and engine ground. See Figure. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If continuity exists, go to step 6. If continuity does not exist, go to the next step.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin harness connectors F68 and M161 terminals No. 16 (Black wire) and No. 18 (Red/Yellow & Black/Pink wire). See Figure. Connectors are located under instrument panel. For connector F68 location, see Figure. For connector M161 location, see Figure.
- Check Gray, 6-pin joint connector No. 20 (connector F71) located in relay box on right side of engine compartment. See Figure.
- Check for open or short between ECM and APP sensor. See SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS
article in ELECTRICAL.
Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- Disconnect Gray, 111-pin ECM harness connector (F48). See Figure. Check harness continuity between ECM terminal No. 73 and APP sensor terminal No. 5 (White wire), ECM terminal No. 74 and APP sensor terminal No. 2 (White/Black wire). See Figure and Figure
. Continuity should exist. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power. If continuity exists, go to step 8. If continuity does not exist, go to the next step.
- Check the following:
- Check for poor connection at White, 18-pin harness connectors F68 and M161 terminals No. 17 (White wire) and No. 15 (White/Black). See Figure. Connectors are located under instrument panel. For connector F68 location, see Figure. For connector M161 location, see Figure.
- Check for open or short between ECM and APP sensor. See SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS
article in ELECTRICAL.
Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
- Inspect APP sensor. Reconnect all harness connectors that have been disconnected. Turn ignition switch ON. Check voltage between ECM terminals No. 73 (APP sensor No. 1 signal), No. 74 (APP sensor No. 2 signal) and engine ground under the following conditions. See APP SENSOR VOLTAGE table. If results are okay, go to the next step. If results are not good, replace accelerator pedal assembly. Perform Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning, Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning and Idle Air Volume Learning under PROGRAMMING .
- No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS
in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
