Neutral Position Signal (A/T Control Unit) System Test

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect and inspect ECM harness connector for pushed-out, bent, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Check continuity between ECM harness connector terminal No. 35 (Green/Black wire) and ground. Move shift lever through gears. Continuity should exist ONLY in Neutral and Park. If continuity is not as specified, go to next step. If continuity is as specified, system is functioning properly.
  2. Disconnect and inspect A/T control unit harness connector for pushed-out, bent, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair connector as necessary. Check continuity of Green/Black wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 35 and A/T control unit harness connector terminal No. 13. Continuity should exist.
  3. If continuity does not exist, check for open harness and connectors. Repair or replace as necessary. If continuity exists, check A/T control unit. See AUTO TRANS ELECT DIAGNOSIS - RE4F04A (3.0L V6) article in the AUTOMATIC TRANS SERVICE section. Also check inhibitor switch. See INHIBITOR SWITCH  .
