Diagnostic Procedure
CAUTION:
To prevent damage to scan tool (MB991502), always turn the ignition off before connecting or disconnecting it.
- Connect scan tool (MB991502) to the data link connector. Remove the air intake hose from the volume airflow sensor. Turn the ignition on. Set the scan tool to data reading mode for item 13: INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR. Heat the sensor using a hair drier. The indicated temperature should increase. [Do not allow temperature to exceed 176°F (80°C)]. Turn the ignition off. Attach the air intake hose. If the sensor is operating properly, it can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent. Refer to INTERMITTENT DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . If the sensor is malfunctioning, go to the next step.
- Check the intake air temperature sensor. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector B-48. Measure the resistance between intake air temperature sensor side connector terminal No. 5 and No. 6. Measure the resistance while heating the sensor using a hair drier. See INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE . If the resistance is at the standard value, go to the next step, otherwise, replace the volume airflow sensor and proceed to step 9.INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE
Temperature - °F (°C) Resistance - Kiloohms -4 (-20) 13-17 32 (0) 5.3-6.7 68 (20) 2.3-3.0 104 (40) 1.0-1.5 140 (60) 0.56-0.76 176 (80) 0.30-0.42 - Check connector B-48 at the intake air temperature sensor for damage. If the connector is in good condition, go to the next step, otherwise, repair or replace it and proceed to step 9.
- Check the continuity at the intake air temperature sensor harness side connector B-48. Disconnect the connector B-48 and measure at the harness side. Check for continuity between terminal No. 5 and ground. The resistance should be less than 2 ohms. If the continuity is normal, proceed to step 7, otherwise, go to the next step.
- Check connector D-134 at PCM for damage. If the connector is in good condition, go to the next step, otherwise, repair or replace it and proceed to step 9.
- Check for open circuit and harness damage between intake air temperature sensor connector B-48 (terminal No. 5) and PCM connector D-134 (terminal No. 88). If the harness wire is in good condition, replace the PCM, otherwise, repair the harness wire. Proceed to step 9.
Go to the next step.
- Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. See OTHER MONITOR under OBD-II DRIVE CYCLES under DRIVE CYCLES. Check the diagnostic trouble codes. If DTC P0111 is set, retry the troubleshooting. If the DTC is absent, the inspection is complete.
