Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check for presence of another key near key being used in ignition switch. If another key is not present nearby, go to next step. If another key is present nearby, move key well away from ignition and try to start vehicle. Recheck for DTCs. If no DTCs set, problem was close proximity of other key. If DTC sets, diagnose DTC and repair as necessary.
  2. Try to start vehicle with spare registered ignition key. If vehicle does not start, go to next step. If vehicle starts, replace ignition key that does not work. Register new ignition key with password and encrypted code. See PROGRAMMING  .
  3. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC 11 is output, go to next step. If DTC 12 is output, go to DTC 12: ENCRYPTED CODES ARE MISMATCHED OR NOT REGISTERED  .
  4. Backprobe key ring antenna 2-pin connector. Measure resistance between key ring antenna connector terminals No. 1 (White/Blue wire) and No. 2 (Black/Blue wire). Resistance should be 2 ohms or less. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ignition key ring antenna.
  5. Check immobilizer-ECU and key ring antenna connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. If problem exists, repair connector(s) as necessary. If problem does not exist, go to next step.
  6. Check for open or short in White/Blue wire between key ring antenna connector terminal No. 1 and immobilizer-ECU connector terminal No. 11. See Figure . Check for open or short in Black/Blue wire between key ring antenna connector terminal No. 2 and immobilizer-ECU connector terminal No. 10. If problem exists, repair appropriate wire as necessary. If problem does not exist, replace immobilizer-ECU. Register password and encrypted code. See PROGRAMMING  .
