Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Do not disconnect generator harness connector. Start and operate engine at idle. Ensure engine is warmed up and radiator fan is stopped. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between generator harness connector terminal No. 3 and ground by backprobing. Check during the following conditions:
    • Headlight switch turned from OFF to ON.
    • Rear defogger switch turned from OFF to ON.
    • Stoplight switch turned from OFF to ON.

Voltage should drop when each switch is actuated. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, go to step  4 .

  2. Check generator harness connector for damage. If connector is in good condition, go to next step. If connector is not in good condition, repair or replace as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  3. Check the trouble symptoms. Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. See OTHER MONITOR  under VERIFYING REPAIRS. Check for DTCs. If DTC P1500 is output, replace ECM or PCM. After replacing ECM or PCM, go to step  11 . If DTC P1500 is not output, malfunction is intermittent.
  4. Check generator harness connector for damage. Repair or replace as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11 . If connector is in good condition, go to next step.
  5. Check generator harness connector for damage. Repair or replace as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11 . If connector is in good condition, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect generator harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between generator harness connector terminal No. 4 and ground. Battery voltage should present. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  9 .
  7. Check ECM harness connector C-119 (M/T) or PCM harness connector C-118 (A/T) for damage. If connector is in good condition, go to next step. If connector is not in good condition, repair or replace as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  8. Check for open or short circuit to ground between generator harness connector terminal No. 4 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 41 (M/T) or PCM harness connector C-118 terminal No. 54 (A/T). If wiring harness is in good condition, replace ECM or PCM. After replacing ECM or PCM, go to step  11 . If wiring harness is not in good condition, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  9. Check ECM harness connector C-119 (M/T) or PCM harness connector C-118 (A/T) for damage. If connector is in good condition, go to next step. If connector is not in good condition, repair or replace as necessary. After repairs, go to step  11 .
  10. Check for harness damage between generator harness connector terminal No. 4 and ECM harness connector C-119 terminal No. 41 (M/T) or PCM harness connector C-118 terminal No. 54 (A/T). If wiring harness is in good condition, replace generator. After replacing generator, go to next step. If wiring harness is not in good condition, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. Test the OBD-II drive cycle. Carry out a test drive with the drive cycle pattern. See OTHER MONITOR  under VERIFYING REPAIRS. Check for DTCs. If DTC P1500 is output, repeat diagnosis. If DTC P1500 is not output, inspection is complete.
